TELEVISION LOG OF THE Sunday, Nov. 19, OF THE SUNDAY INDEPENDENT-PRESS LONG BEACH DANCERS Durable Crooner (See Page 9) TELEGRAM, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA BERT'S EYE VIEW Long Beach Dancers Hit With Welk The Long Beach couple edged closer to the dance stand, hoping that Lawrence Welk would recognize them. There was a good reason why he possibly would. The pair, Barbara Boylan and Bob Burgess, both 20, had appeared before on his television program. They had, in fact, won the televised dance contest Welk had conducted.

There were reasons why they would understand if Welk didn't recognize them. They had won the contest in April. This was July 27, three months later. This was Welk's opening night at the Hollywood a night of pressures and a night that had nothing to do with his television program, They would understand if he didn't recognize them, but he did. He did more.

"Would you like to put on a dance exhibition?" he asked They would. "What shall it be Welk asked, naming one of his records that sold more than a million copies and to which the Long Beach State College pair had danced before. "If it's OK, we'd rather dance to 'Yellow Bird'," replied Bob, naming a new Welk record that was on its way up the popularity list. "Wonderful," said the -pleased Welk. JUST, COINCIDENTALLY the pair had made up a new dance for "Yellow Bird." The exhibition was a smash hit.

"Wonderful," said Welk to the audjence. "How would like to see this young couple on our television pro'gram next week?" Applause -loud and long. a pearance, the couple went back to the Palladium and again were invited to give a dance exhibition. After the dance exhibition, Welk said: This wonderful young couple now appears with us every week on our Saturday night television program."
