ihScjih school football Saturday, October 17, 1987 2B Hainn on dtefenns to lbs 14- at BHP, coach Harold Jones said. "We kept telling them all week that we needed another outing from our defense like we had last week against Wren and that's just what we got." The Hanna offense, which failed to score a touchdown in its 3-0 win over Wren a week ago, was back in full gear in the first half. After forcing BHP to punt after the first series, the Jackets took over at their 36 and, led by blue chip quarterback Preston Jones, Hanna proceeded to march down the field to the BHP three. The Bears' defense stiffened and the Jackets were forced to give up the ball. HONEA PATH A Hanna team better known for its passing prowess proved it could also move the ball on the ground Friday night to defeat previously unbeaten Belton-Honea Path, 14-0.

To be quite honest, the Yellow Jackets didn't need a lot of offense. For the second straight week their defense controlled the game. Hanna held BHP to 108 total yards and picked off three Brad Creel passes, including a pair by Reggie Watts. Only twice could the Bears push the football into Hanna territory. "I thought we played an exceptional game tonight," Hanna head Again, BHP was unable to move and, this time Hanna took over at the Bears' 34.

From there it took the Jackets five plays to score, with Jones going the final yard and Brian Mattison adding the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Although Hanna continued to dominate play in the first period, it appeared the two teams would head in with Hanna up by only seven at the half. But, after pushing the BHP offense back 19 yards to its own four, Hanna started a drive, with 42 seconds left at the Bears' 32. From there Jones completed a 15- yard pass to Lee Dorsey and a 15-yarder to Aaryn Williams, which put the ball on the BHP one. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Jones rammed into the middle of the line.

Although it appeared he may have been stopped short of the goal line, he was awarded a touchdown after the players unpiled, giving Hanna a 14-0 halftime lead. In the second half Hanna's defense continued to be dominating, while the offense, led by Jones, did a good job of just running the clock. Jones completed 8-of-19 passes for 101 yards, while suffering one interception. But he was even more im- pressive conducting the running game. At times he even showed he was capable of being a more than adequate ball carrier as he gained 32 yards on eight carries.

On several of those plays he managed to hurl his 6-foot-4, 205-pound body so forcely into BHP linemen that he bowled several over. "No one will ever confuse me with Earl Campbell," Jones said. "And I'm not a 175-pounder that can put juking moves on a defense. I just tried to use this 205-pound body to get an extra yard here and theie." The win lifted Hanna's record to i i am If Brooks, Esoles DludkiGon Besirs GREENWOOD Robert Brooks scored four touchdowns, three of them in the second half when Greenwood rallied from a 17-14 halftime deficit to beat Brook-land-Cayce 35-17. He scored on runs of 3 yards in the first quarter, 12 and 1 in the third quarter, and 8 in the fourth. Willie Griffin scored Greenwood's other TD on a 21-yard run in the second quarter. BC went ahead in the final two minutes of the first half on a 3-yard touchdown run by Rodney Mack, who gained 145 of his 151 yards in the first half. Greenwood is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-AAAA heading into a game next week at Midland Valley, where two years ago the Eagles were upset while they were ranked No. 1 in the state.
