Former Librarians Hitd White Beards Continued from Page 4A. as far as the first classes in 1869. library has grown tremendously in 23 years," Dr. Tolles tells you! But he can remember Vividly the time when "weeks would go by and nobody came." The big task, he says, was "to get word around that it was a good research library." The library recently attracted researchers from California and Great Britain. Dr: Tolles is the fourth, librar- ian of the Friends Library--and the youngest.

He turned 49 last Saturday. "They think I have a long white beard," he muses. The three librarians who preceded him were retired professors who had beards. First Curator The director says much credit for the Jane Addams collection goes to Ellen Starr' Brinton, first curator. About half of the collection was in the Library of Congress.

She went to Washington and got it. Dr. Tolles has traveled extensively--not as much as he formerly did and looked into a lot of attics for historic quaker items. A painting of a Quaker woman which hangs on one of the library walls was discovered in a barn in Maine. A Swarthmore faculty member since 1941, Dr.

Tolles formerly taught at Harvard, where he obtained his bachelor and master of arts degrees and a doctorate of philosophy in American civilization. He is married to the former Ellen Smith; a Radcliffe College graduate who is going to college again to obtain a teaching certificate. They haye three children Ellen Tolles Baker, James M. Tolles, 19, a student at Kalamazoo College, and Katie, 14, a student at Swarthmore High School. Dr.

Tolles remembers many interesting stories dbout the library i some students amusingly referred to as "The Fiends' Library." He recalled with a chuckle the day when William Bacon Evans of Moorestown, N.J., spotted a coed smoking. The visitor liked people and said thee to everyone. When he saw the coed puffing away he smiled and remarked: "I am very glad to have met thee. When thee decides to up smoking I shall be very glad." HICKS ORIGINAL This version of The Peaceable Kingdom by famed primitive Quaker poet Edward Hicks hangs on one of the walls of the Friends Historical Library. The library also has another original Hicks oil painting.
