Wednesday, June 17, 1987 5C (Thf CnrrtivUtf ftnys Bakker. Continued from Page 1C Despite PTL's TV-time debts, stations say show will go on cials to go to the Bakkers' house. He said he had never seen the Bakkers' house or any of the other houses owned by PTL in Tega Cay. DeMoss didn't walk down the sloping driveway to the Bakkers' house, which can't be seen from the top of the driveway. Bakker gave up the ministry March 19 when he admitted to an extramarital liaison with a church secretary in 1980.

He named Falwell to succeed him, and the independent Baptist minister subsequently barred his return to power at PTL in the future, citing mismanagement of the ministry's finances and allegations of homosexuality. PTL officials had given the Bakkers a June 15 deadline to leave the house, where the Bakkers have remained virtually secluded since last week, but DeMoss said it "wasn't a firm deadline." "We're not overly concerned about a timetable or a deadline, nearly as much as we're concerned about simply opening communications and discussing the matter," DeMoss said. DeMoss also said PTL would continue to provide security for the Bakkers "as long as there was a need for it." KMSB-TV in Tucson, hasn't received a copy of PTL's reorganization petition and no decision has been made whether to cancel programming, said Allen Canfield, the station's business manager. KMSB, which PTL says it owes $82,430, serves 301,000 households, Canfield said. James Panagos, general sales manager for WGPR, said the Detroit station has been doing business with PTL for about 10 years and doesn't plan to cancel PTL programming.

"No, why would anybody want to cancel the people? They're not broke. Their assets are, I understand, roughly three-to-one (against he said. PTL owes WGPR $126,945, according to court records. Two stations among the top 20 unsecured creditors have already canceled programming by PTL WCIX-TV in Miami and WWHT-TV in Newark, N.J. WCIX has not carried PTL since March 13, while WWHT quit showing PTL the first week of May, officials said.

PTL owes WCIX $109,395 and WWHT $78,014, court records show. One cable group Tele-Communications Inc. of Denver dropped the PTL Network last week. Under the station's terms, PTL would have to pay cash in advance to continue being aired on the station, which reaches 345,000 households in the Rochester area. If PTL cannot meet the terms, Ram-baldo said, then they will be given a date for the program's cancellation.

He refused to elaborate further on the letter because it has not been sent yet. The last payment received from PTL by the station was in October 1986, he said. Other stations said their viewers wanted them to keep showing PTL programs. "A lot of our customers like it, but naturally we're very aware of what's going on," said Jim Duffy, director of public affairs for ATL Cable in Englewood, Colo. "We're monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis." PTL owes ATL Cable $169,443, according to court records.

Duffy said the cable network serves 3.5 million households in 32 states. WNOL-TV in New Orleans, which PTL says it owes $162,860, has not decided whether to continue carrying PTL programming, said Madeline Bonnot, the station's general manager. Zvi Shoubin, station manager for WPHL-TV, said the Philadelphia station would continue televising PTL. COLUMBIA (AP) The television stations owed the most money by PTL are keeping a close eye on the religious ministry's struggle to deal with its debts, but most don't plan to quit showing PTL programming, station officials said Tuesday. Of PTL's top 20 unsecured creditors, 11 are U.S.

television stations and one is a cable company, according to the Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Columbia last week. Of those 12, two are no longer showing PTL programming and one WDCA-TV in Washington couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday. The rest are keeping a close eye on PTL's struggle to pay off its debts before deciding what to do. PTL's total debt to TV stations is about $6.3 million, with the average individual debt about $30,000 per station, said Walter Richardson, director of ministry marketing at PTL.

WUHF-TV in Rochester, N.Y., which PTL says it owes $82,888, will drop the religious ministry's programming if PTL doesn't meet the terms of a letter being drafted by the station, said Richard Ram-baldo, vice president and general manager. night have remained in front of the home in hopes the couple would talk with them. DeMoss said the Bakkers knew he was outside but that he didn't ask to meet with them. Earlier, DeMoss said PTL officials had telephoned and written Bakker and his wife. Tammy, in hopes of setting up a meeting.

"They've been invited to talk," DeMoss said. "There have been regular attempts by letter and telephone, all of which have gone unanswered so far. But we'll keep trying. "As recently as (Monday) a letter was hand delivered over here, asking for some kind of meeting," he said. "I don't want to say they've resisted, but it (a meeting) hasn't happened yet." The letter was from Harry Har-grave, chief operating officer for PTL, and was delivered by Har-dister, DeMoss said.

But DeMoss said the Bakkers had not responded to the letter. DeMoss said he had not been asked by Falwell or other PTL offi- Continued from Page 1C brief interviews with authors and people who have testimonies to give, Marcus said. "It's important the host should never become the center attraction," said Marcus, a 37-year-old charismatic who converted from Judaism and was once a New York advertising executive. "The featured performers should be the guest stars and authors." "PTL The Inspirational Network" once produced a variety of Christian shows and is still the only strictly religious cable television network. The Christian Broadcasting Network founded by evan-gelist Pat Robertson airs predominantly advertised-based secular programs.

Except for the "PTL Club" and "Tammy's House Party," the Bakkers canceled the network's other original programming several months ago. "Television became the third tier behind buildings and the theme park," said Marcus, on leave as chief operating officer of Liberty Broadcasting Network owned by Falwell's fundamentalist ministry. Miss Hart left Denver this week for a three-week visit to the Soviet Union where she was invited when Hart met last year with the Soviet leader, Mikhail S. Gorbachev. Sweeney and a personal friend of Hart who asked not to be identified said that announced and unannounced Democratic candidates still in the race had approached Hart to turn over his position papers to them. Since his withdrawal, Hart has spent many hours with his family at their house west of Denver, said Bill Shore, a campaign aide who has continued to assist Hart. "This has been the toughest thing they have ever had to go through, Shore said. "I think they're doing terrific." Shore added that that Hart's wife, Lee, has been "unbelievably supportive." Other aides, who asked not be named said that although the couple had experienced "ups and downs" in their marriage, Mrs. Hart had accepted his conduct and would stand by her husband. "I've seen them both and they seem to be in good spirits," said do I think they're unpacking," he said.

"I don't have any reason to believe they're going to leave in the next few days." But DeMoss said there "is a point" at which the Bakkers would no longer be able to live in the house in Tega Cay, which is about 10 miles from PTL's Heritage USA Christian retreat and television studios. Bakker emerged from the house briefly Tuesday to walk along the driveway, and Tammy Bakker drove off with a friend to an undisclosed location for lunch. Mrs. Bakker returned shortly after 5 p.m. and spoke briefly with reporters.

"Are you guys waiting for a present?" she asked reporters. "It was just Mart, though. What did I get at Mart? I got some hair spray and a frosting kit to do my hair with." Mrs. Bakker refused to answer any questions about how long the Bakkers planned to stay in the house. DeMoss spoke twice to reporters, who since last Wednesday PTL raising, which nobody liked, particularly the employees.

They are so much happier now." The pitch for money is still there but it is more low-key and less hysterical than in previous years. Jim and Tammy Bakker, the deposed founders of the PTL empire, which includes the Heritage USA complex, used the program to market their records, books and tapes and would not book other competing authors and singers, Marcus said. "Nobody felt it was truly representative of Christian television," said Marcus, who assumed his job 10 weeks ago at PTL Chairman Jerry Falwell's request. "A lot of stars did not appear on it the past six years because of the way it was structured. They wouldn't refuse.

They'd just say they were busy," he said. PTL filed last week for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy laws, saying it owed 1,400 creditors $72 million. Marcus, whose $75,000 annual salary continues to be paid by Liberty Broadcasting, doubts PTL will ever have a single dominant force again.

The "PTL Club" appeals to the over-50 group, and the ministry needs to develop programming to attract teen-agers and yuppies, he said. Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who was once accused of trying to undermine Bakker's control of PTL, will return to the satellite network within a few weeks after having been canceled Sept. 26. "He called and asked to be on the network and to pay for the time," said Marcus. "I realized the possible political implications and called Jerry Falwell, and he said put him on.

We are supposed to be a broad-based religious network." The network carries programming from 42 denominations, including Seventh-Day Adventists and Messianic Jews. Hart, who withdrew from the presidential race on May 8 amid allegations of extramarital relationships, has conducted a series of meetings with former campaign aides to plan his re-emergence from the Rocky Mountain seclusion, probably this fall. i "It has been implied that it is a political operation, and that is just not the case," said Kevin Sweeney, Hart's campaign press secretary. Sweeney is among those who have been meeting with Hart to plan his re-emergence as a citizen-advocate for the ideas he Daydreams demonstrate reality of sex DUBLIN, Ga.

(AP) A sex education class that has helped cut Into the teen pregnancy rate in middle Georgia begins with a daydream. Students in the class taught by Margo McKinley are asked to dream about what they'd like to be doing five years from now. The daydreams are stopped short with some facts about the consequences of casual sex. "I tell them to pretend they just this minute got a positive result on a pregnancy test. Or that their girlfriend just got a positive," Ms.

McKinley said. "That would mean that instead of how they imagined things would be five years down the road, they would be parents of a 5-year-old child. "You can see the shock on their faces as they realize it could hap-pen." Imagining life in the future has other benefits for the students, said Ms. McKinley, health educator with the South Central Health District, which serves 10 middle Georgia counties. Such activity helps the children set goals, and Ms.

Mckinley said research has shown that teenagers with goals are less likely to be sexually active. Those who are sexually active, but who have goals, are less likely to become pregnant, she added. Ms. McKinley has developed a Curriculum called "Responsible Sexuality It's OK to Say No," which has been seen by 30,000 students since 1981. For her work, she was recently awarded the 1987 Jules S.
