"I mean, we're fortunate to be where we are, considering the number of injuries we've had and, our relatively poor performance." The A's parade of agony has been chronicled.

Eight players were on the disabled list at one point, and the A's have already used 19 pitchers. The mental burden was severe." "I think we were on the verge, of a breakdown because of the-, uncertainty," Alderson said." "There was nothing to hold on to. Aug. 17, 1957 Richie Ashburn, of the Phillies, accidentally hits spectator Alice Roth with a foul ball and breaks her nose. As Roth is being removed from the stands on a stretcher, Ashburn hits her with another foul ball. Barry Larkin became only the third shortstop to hit three home runs in a game last week. The others were Ernie Banks of the Cubs, who did it twice, and the Angels' 5-foot-5 Freddie Patek, hit only 41 career home runs in 14 seasons.

Red Sox manager Joe Morgan said the two-run home run hit by Cecil Fielder in Boston Thursday night was the longest he'd ever seen at Fenway Park. Just in case stadium security guards don't believe he's really a player, Mets rookie pitcher Doug Simons carries his baseball card with him as identification, Tuesday night's Texas battery of Nolan Ryan, 44, and Ivan Rodriguez, 19, marked the first time a 40-or-older pitcher has thrown to a teen-age catcher since Art Fowler, then 41, and Ed Kirkpatrick, then 19, were teamed with the 1963 Los Angeles Angels. Since relief pitcher Randy Myers was traded from the Mets to the Reds two years ago, Cincinnati has beaten New York eight times. Myers has earned the save in seven of them. 48 9 200 29 50 3 By Rudy Jones News staff writer with wire reports Ray Calhoun pitched so well in the Florida State League this season that he cost himself a spot in an all-star game. Calhoun, a 1987 graduate of Greenville's Carolina High School, had two wins and 12 saves for the Vero Beach Dodgers, including two wins and five saves in his final seven appearances. That earned him a berth in the class A league's all-star game and a promotion to the Dodgers' Class AA team in San Antonio of the Texas League. Calhoun's role has changed with the promotion. He's now in a setup role, where he expects the Dodgers to use him throughout his career.

In practice, though, there's little change from closer to setup. "It's basically the same," Calhoun said via telephone Friday from San Antonio. "You come in, throw strikes and get people out." Calhoun had a 6.23 earned-run average over his first three appearances in San Antonio. "The first one was a little shaky," Calhoun said. "The ones after that have been great." The big change from Class A to AA is the caliber of the hitters, Calhoun said.

"The hitters are more selective. There are better hitters here, so you can't make that many mistakes." Carolina has produced several professional players. Calhoun credits much of his development to former Trojan coach Lester Erwin. "We had a great coach in Lester. He knows baseball." From high school, Calhoun went to another proven producer of professional players, Lon Joyce at Spartanburg Methodist.

"Lon's an exceptional coach," Calhoun said. "People know about him and the fact he turns out a lot of players." Calhoun's development has continued as a pro. "You learn a lot by being around guys who have been around a few years before you." After Calhoun signed with the Dodgers in 1989, he had a 1.59 ERA and two saves with Great Falls, then had a 3.01 ERA and 1-0 record with Bakersfield. Calhoun was at Vero Beach in 1990, compiling a 7-1 record, two saves and a 2.81 ERA. Vero Beach is the closest Dodgers' farm team to Greenville, so Calhoun has little face-to-face contact with his family.

"My parents made one trip to Florida. But, that's OK," Calhoun said. "I'm away from home, but I just want to play and make it to the bigleagues." First baseman Greg Brock, released last week by the Milwaukee Brewers, might find himself with the Atlanta Braves soon. With both Sid Bream (knee) and Nick Esasky (vertigo) on the disabled list and neither Tommy Gregg nor Mike Kelly apparently the answer, Brock, who began his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, might be the next best choice, once he clears waivers, says the Los Angeles Times. Jack Clark ripped teammate Tony Gwynn in San Diego last year, saying Gwynn was a selfish player who cared only for his stats.

Clark was allowea to become a free agent after the season and he signed with the Boston Red Sox. Recently, he was asked to fill out an All-Star poll. For the best player in baseball he nominated Tony Gwynn. There'a a fascinating new book on the market. "The Baseball Chronology," edited by James Charlton, is a diary of the historic and the quirky.
