Robert Huffman won the rain- shortened NASCAR Goody's Dash Series 150 on Monday, his second straight victory at Day-tona International Speedway The race, cut from its sched uled 60 laps to 44, had been postponed from Sunday by rain. Eric Wilson led from lap 10 to 32 and Huffman, driving a Toyota, moved into the lead the next trip around the 2V4-mile taking advantage of an early pit stop during a caution period. The race played out there right into our hands. The Ponti-acs don't go as far as our car goes on gas, and they had to make another stop," said Huff-.

My car, obviously, was not the fastest one out there," he said. NASCAR officials did not allow process servers into the track. assistant BY PETE DOUGHERTY pdoughergfeenbaypressgazette.com Mike Sherman turned to an old coaching friend and the resurgent University of Iowa football team to connect with his new apprentice for offensive line coach Larry Beightol. Sherman announced Monday the hiring of Iowa offensive line coach Joe Philbin to replace Pat Ruel as the Packers' assistant offensive line coach. In 1979, Sherman was on the high school football staff at Worcester (Mass.) Academy with Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. The 41-year-old Philbin was Iowa's offensive line coach for four years and is coming off a season in which the Hawkeyes landed three offensive linemen on the all-Big Ten Conference first team.

"We really had a special-group of guys, guys that had kind of been like me," Philbin said in a teleconference. "If you look at my resume, one thing I'm proud of is I've kind of earned my stripes, I haven't been in the big time too long. They're a group of guys that hung together and believed in themselves. We had kind of a storybook season, and they're all certainly deserving of the recognition they got this year." Philbin will begin working in Green Bay on Thursday. He replaces Ruel, who assisted Beightol the past two years before accepting the job as Buffalo's offensive line coach earlier in the offseason.

As Beightol's assistant, Philbin will be involved in all aspects of coaching the offensive line, though his emphasis will be working with the youngest players. "Hopefully get them acclimated to the National Football League," Philbin said, "and the system and the scheme and different techniques they're going to use. If you're getting kids from different parts of the country and different levels of college football, it's always helpful to acclimate them as quick as you can." Philbin shares some of the same coaching roots as Sherman he was the offensive line coach at Worcester Tech in 1986 and '87, and then coached a decade at lower-level college football before going to Iowa. He was offensive line coach at the TVPackers High school basketball polls Raiders rout Bulldogs to staff U.S. Merchant Ma rine Academy ('88- 89) and Ohio Uni versity ('94), and offensive coordinator and offen Packers online Ongoing, archived coverage at sive line coach at Northeastern Uni versity ('95-96) and Harvard ('97-98) before joining Fer www.packers entz at Iowa in 99.

news.com The move to as sistant offensive line coach is a much smaller step than becoming a lead offensive line coach in the league. But it gives him a foot in the door in the NFL, and if Philbin performs well Sherman could end up grooming him as Beightol's replacement. Beightol turns 61 in November. "It's a good opportunity," Philbin said. "The National Football League is obviously quite a bit different.

The Big Ten, where I'm coming from, is regarded as one of the best con' ferences in college football, but that said, there's going to be adjustments, there's going to be a learning curve that I need to get adjusted to. "I certainly feel like I have the capacity to learn the NFL game at a rapid pace. I don't have a timetable of how long that's going to take, I'm just looking forward to contributing in whatever way I can." Iowa's offensive line was a major factor in the team's sue cess last season the Hawkeyes went 11-2 and played in the Orange Bowl. All three of its first-team all-Big Ten linemen began their careers at Iowa as tight ends: left tackle Robert Gallery, left guard Eric Steinbach and center Bruce Nelson. Right tackle David Porter was second-team all-Big Ten.

Steinbach is a likely first- round draft pick this year. Ferentz also got much of the credit for the offensive line's play because he was an offen sive line coach in the NFL at Baltimore and Cleveland before becoming head coach at Iowa. "Joe has done an outstanding job during his tenure at Iowa, establishing the Hawkeyes of fensive line as one of the best in college football," Sherman said in a written statement released by the Packers. "He is an excel lent teacher and should be a big plus in assisting Larry Beightol." get more Station lineup WFRV, NewsChannel 5, Green Bay WTMJ, Milwaukee WAOW, WausauRhinelander WYOW, Eagle River WJMN, Escanaba, Mich.
