THE FAVORITES: Dundee-Crown's boys finished the season unbeaten and look to head the field while the girls race is up for grabs, with CL South, McHenry, Woodstock and CL Central battling for the title.

Woodstock's Brad Heidtke and McHenry's Erin Boland, both McHenry County champs, are the individual favorites. THE COURSE: Two miles for the girls, three for the boys. Mainly a flat course through forest preserve terrain, several inclines and blind turns. Girls course record is 11:50, set in 1984 by CL South's Krissy Imbur. The boys course record, 15:43, was also set in 1984 by Dundee-Crown's Mike Buh-row.

Expect some fast times. 6 furlongs, $10,000 claiming, 3 yo fillies doesn't take that much (to replace Collins) if the other kids run well," he said. "She's a good runner, and they'll miss her, but a loss of one person would hurt a team like Woodstock or ourselves much more, not a team that's deep like South." McHenry's Erin Boland, the defending Class AA state champion, is expected to win her third straight FVC crown Saturday, while Woodstock's Brad Heidtke is the boys individual favorite. For Johnsburg's girls, Saturday represents an opportune time to break out of the bridesmaid role the Skyhawks have worn for the last two years. Johnsburg is led by sophomore twins Jodi and Jackie Giese.

"The girls would have to be the favorites going in, but it all depends on if Grant is healthy," said Johnsburg coach Rich Esch-mann. "Either way it would be a good competition. The boys can still pull it out, it's up to our three seniors. If we can get our top two in the top five, I think we have enough backup to do it." Yet Dundee-Crown coach Tom Smith remains cautious. "You still have to go out and perform," said Smith, whose boys team is the favorite to win the 12th Fox Valley Conference Cross Country Meet at. 10 a.m. Saturday at Binnie Woods Forest Preserve.

"Our biggest obstacle is that "the kids have to stay relaxed and not go beyond anything they've already done this year. Like what happened to the Cubs, there were so many guys out there trying too hard. We just have to go out and try to run like we know we can and get our pack as tight as we can." The Charger boys, who have not lost an FVC dual meet since 1985, went through the conference season with a 6-0 record, winning their toughest dual of the year last week over CL Central, 22-30, the team that should provide D-C with its biggest challenge. In the girls race, the loss of Niki Collins has put a cramp in Crystal Lake South's plans to beat defending champ McHenry. Collins' shoulder injury, while not pushing South completely out of the race, has nonetheless opened the door for several other area teams, including McHenry, Woodstock and CL Central.

Also Saturday, Johnsburg's girls will be the. odds-on favorite to win the Northwest Suburban Conference Meet at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda. The Skyhawks finished the season undefeated in duals, but will still have to go head to head with Race 4: Rating: 7 furlongs, $16,000 claiming, 3 yos 7- 2 4-1 4-1 9- 2 8- 1 10- 1 12-1 20-1 Staunch Obsession Day Long Shifty Lady Gryder Legend In Lace Hirdes Girl to Remember Silva Fire Quest Sorrows Cinderella Bay Fires My Darling General Sellers Twenty a Day Tim Guidry Always close Road trouble in last Fought bias in last Drops; could contend Drops back from routes Winless this year Owns some speed Winless this year and last a healthy Grant team that was riddled with injuries when Johns-burg defeated it, 20-35 earlier in the season. D-C's boys got an added shot in the arm after the Central win with the emergence of freshman Leon Torres, who won the varsity race. Teamed with Khalil Jendo, Chadd Morrissy and Troy Fisch-bach, the Chargers have the kind of talent and depth to earn the title.

"I've said it 100 times before, whatever Leon or Rich (Arsen-ault) or any of the others do is a bonus," said Smith. "It's up to the seniors tomorrow." Central is paced by sophomore Skip Vinson, Matt Levine and Ed Renollet, while South puts its faith in Todd Donohue, Cory Smith and Jerry Byrd. Jacobs' Chris Miller also poses a serious threat for the individual title. McHenry coach Earl Kyle does not think South's chances will be hurt that much by the loss of Collins.
