Sunday; April 25. 1 993 VACATION-IS Amusement parks are going Hollywood 0 'Aladdin' and other films inspire the latest attractions By Gene Sloan Gannett News Service When it comes to new rides and shows this summer, the nation's amusement parks are going Hollywood. Batman, Aladdin and other recent movie hits are the themes for the latest multi-million-dollar "They're finally bringing the theming back to theme parks. This is the year of the movie-based ride," says Paul Ruben, of Park World magazine.

And that shouldn't be surprising since movie studios have been buying parks nationwide. Time Warner acquired Six Flags and its seven amusement parks in December 1991. Last August, Paramount scooped up Kings, which owned four of the biggest U.S. parks. And, of course, Disney and Universal are old hands at the busi Santa Clara, and April 9 at Kings Island near Cincinnati.

Batman. The $9 million Batman The Ride, opening May 1 at Six Flags Great Adventure (N.J.), whisks visitors through Gotham City and on a high-speed roller coaster to the Batcave. Batman The Escape, at Houston's Astroworld, opens April 24 and ventures through Penguin's Arctic Park and 100 special effects before ending with a stand-up coaster ride. Also: The Batman Stunt Show ness with parks in California and Florida. Among movie-themed attractions ahead: Days of Thunder.

A racing simulator ride, opens April 17 at Paramount's Carowinds Park, Charlotte, N.C., and Kings Dominion, Doswell, Va. Top Gun. A high-speed suspended roller coaster (feet dangle in air), simulating a jet fighter with 360-degree loops and zero gravity. It opened in March at Paramount's Great American, heads to Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, And Astroworld gets Batman Nights Laser Fireworks Spectacular. Disney and Universal aren't taking all this sitting down.

Disney World in Orlando now has Aladdin's Royal Caravan, a parade based on their 1992 animated hit. And Universal Studios Hollywood adds Back to the Future The Ride, a variation of the ride at their Florida park, on July 1.
