INGLEWOOD (AP) Set plays in basketball usually work only in practice. In a game, too many things, including the opposing players, get in the way. For once, however, everything went just as Golden State coach Don Nelson diagrammed it Latrell Sprewell broke across the lane, took a pass from Billy Owens and quickly lofted the ball up and in.

That shot with 18 seconds left gave the Warriors a one-point lead. Sprewell then rebounded a miss by the Los Angeles Lakers' Sam Bowie, was fouled and made both free throws to seal the Warriors' 100-97 victory Sunday night. "That play went exactly like we wanted it to," Nelson said proudly. "You don't sec that very often." Making it more unlikely was the fact that Sprewell said he's not used to taking a soft-touch, high-arcing jumper like that. And Bowie, 7-foot-1, was standing right in front of the 6-4 Sprewell.

"I was sure Bowie was going to block that shot," said Sprewell, who had 10 of his 19 points in the final quarter. "I was surprised when he didn't go up. "Coach said he was going to go to me for the shot and I got excited. That little touch shot was new for me. I didn't know whether it was going to go in or not.

But I had to put it up." Bowie, who had put the Lakers up 97-96 with a turnaround jumper 11 seconds earlier, said of Sprewell's basket: "He froze me because he went up so quickly. I thought he was going to gather himself before he shot." The victory was the eighth in their last 10 games for the Warriors, while the Lakers lost their fourth straight. "We had our chances, but Sprewell made the big shot," said Scdale Threatt, who had 14 points off the bench for the Lakers. "It's tough when you lose three in a row and try so hard to get a win. We played OK, but they just made a tough shot." When the Lakers came up the floor following Sprewell's jumper, Bowie forced a shot from the left baseline and it wasn't close.

"They ran three men at me and pushed me out farther than I would like. I could've been stronger with the shot," Bowie said. After Sprewell's two free throws, the Lakers had six-tenths of a second left, but Nick Van Exel's desperation shot from near mid- court wasn't close. Avery Johnson added 17 points for the Warriors. Reserves Keith Jennings and Jeff Grayer had 13 points apiece, and Chris Galling added eight.

"The bench really picked us up," Nelson said. "We had three Grayer, Jennings and Galling who made major contributions off the bench." Doug Christie led the Lakers with 19 points while Bowie and Van Exel had 16 each. The Warriors broke away from an 83-83 tie on five points by Owens. However, Bowie then scored eight points and Christie had six to help Los Angeles go up 97-96 in a game that was close almost all the way. Kings' Hurley critically injured in auto accident SACRAMENTO (AP) Bobby Hurley of the Sacramento Kings was critically injured Sunday night when he was thrown into a ditch in a car accident about an hour after playing against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kings spokesman Travis Stanley said the 22-year-old rookie guard sustained head, neck and back trauma, wo collapsed lungs, several fractured ribs and lacerations. He was sllll being evaluated at the Medical Center emergency room three hours after ttie crash. Hospital spokeswoman Linda Kong said early Monday his condition would not be categorized until later in the day. At first, the hospital listed Hurley as critical. Authorities said the unidentified driver of the other vehicle was in serious condition with a possible fractured leg.

The driver, believed to be in his 40s, was cut from his station wagon by emergency crews and airlifted to the same hospital. Hurley was tossed Stem his light truck and was found face down in a drainage canal next to a field. The accident happened at 9:15 p.m. PST about 65 minutes after the Kings lost to the Clippers 112-102. No team scores were kept, but the Ukiah and Willits grapplers dominated the matches. However, Healdsburg, with 13 grapplers, also made its presence felt. Director Tom Phillips matched wrestlers roughly by weight and experience where possible, and at least one coach, Willits' Bob Colvig, liked the fact that virtually everyone got to wrestle three times, rather than once or.twice as hi a regular.

The wildest match of the day was a 189-pound match between Ukiah's Chris Fort and Jacob Brown, with Brown winning in overtime on a takedown, 19-17, after the pair rolled their way to a 17-17 tie in three regulation periods. Maurice Cavness, who waded through three 165-pound foes for three pin victories, won the fastest total pins award, finishing off his three opponents in a total of four minutes, 47 seconds. Cabrillo captures Mendocino Tournament By GLENN ERICKSON Journal Sports Editor Emeritus Cabrillo, New Zealand and College of the Redwoods carted home championship, third-place and consolation trophies after Sunday's final day of the 1993 Mendocino College Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament. It was an exciting, wild finish to a tournament which provided fans a final day of slam-bang action.

The Cabrillo College Seahawks defeated Ohlone College, 82-80, in the final seconds of a sometimes bitter free-swinging championship game. A jump-shot by Seahawk Larry ShrieVt 1 seconds to go gave Cabrilib an edge, and an interception by rangy Anthony Epidendio of a long Oholne pass sealed the victory. Host Mendocino College and the New Zealand Kiwis almost shot the lights out in the first half of the shoot-out for third place. New Zealand unleashed a spectacular and unexpected final half of fast-breaks and rebounding to win, 93-66. The two teams combined for 18 3-point field goals in the first 20 minutes, 10 by Mendocino and eight by New Zealand.

There were 24 treys in the game, 13 of them by the Eagles. But it was Kiwi board dominance (40-13), particularly in the last half, and its perimeter passing and play set-up which did Mendo- See MENDOCINO, Page 5 Montana, Chiefs can't break Denver hex Raiders only one game behind KG for first place By Associated Press Joe Montana and John Elway. A chance to clinch a playoff berth. A long-running hex. Kansas City's visit to Denver on Sunday had every ingredient for a classic NFL matchup. And in one of those rare instances this season, the game lived up to expectations. Elway threw three touchdown passes to Shannon Sharpe, the final one set up by Reggie Rivers' blocked punt, as he outdueled Joe Montana, who had a pair of TD passes, in Denver's 27-21 victory.

The Broncos (8-5) rallied from a 14-3 second-quarter deficit for their llth straight home win against the Chiefs (9-4), who still lead the AFC West by a game over Denver and the Los Angeles Raiders. "After it's over and you win, you can reflect on how great a game it was and how great the quarterbacks were," Denver coach Wade Phillips said. Elway hit 20-of-30 for 221 yards. He found Sharpe for touchdowns of 9, 14 'and 6 yards. "There were times I didn't know who was playing where," Elway said.

"Shannon was the one constant. He just played off his instinct." Montana's instincts were pretty good, too. He finished 17-of-30 for 237 yards, with TDs to Jonathan Hayes and Willie Davis. "The Broncos and Chiefs both played then- tails off. It came down to one play the blocked punt," said KC coach Marty Schotten- heimer, now 0-7 at Mile High.

Rivers blocked the punt, then wrestled with punter Bryan Barker for the ball. Barker knocked it 20 yards back toward his own goal and Denver ended up starting at the Chiefs' 11. Elway and Sharpe connected for the go-ahead score. The Chiefs' Marcus Allen had a 4-yard run for his 14th touchdown of the season and his NFL-leading llth rushing TD. Raiders 27 Seahawks 23 At Los Angeles, the Raiders (8-5) had their biggest scoring output of the season, including a 17-point spree in the third quarter, when they have outscored opponents 64-26.

Tim Brown returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown to start that scoring burst Giants 20 Colts 6 The Giants have been steady if not spectacular all year with a dose of good fortune. That often leads to the playoffs, as it has for the Giants (10-3). "I never expected to see the playoffs this year, not in my wildest dreams," linebacker Corey Miller said.

"With all the changes around here, players, coach, everything. I never expected it." The Giants were 8-8 and 6-10 under Ray Handley, who was replaced by Dan Reeves. Now, they have the best record in the league. Cowboys 37 Vikings 20 Although the Cowboys (9-4) didn't think they played too well, everyone else was impressed. Emmitt Smith rushed for 104 yards, Troy Aikman passed for 208 yards, Michael Irvin had eight receptions for 125 yards and a TD, and Eddie Murray made field goals of 52,51 and 46 yards.

From late in the first quarter to midway through the third, Dallas (9-4) had 13 first downs to none for the Vikings (6-7). "I don't think we're close to last year," Irvin said. "It was a good day offensively, but not a great day. When we have a great day, people will know about it." Lions 21 Cardinals 14 Lions coach Wayne Fontes sure looks smart. Fontes elevated Erik Kramer from third string and Kramer threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns against host Phoenix (4-9).

Still, Detroit (8-5) needed a goal- line stand to snap a three-game slide. Packers 20 Chargers 13 At San Diego, the Packers (8-5) stayed even with the Lions in the NFC Central thanks to big defensive plays. TOny Bennett and Johnny Holland stuffed fourth-down plays and Terrell Buckley and Mike Prior intercepted passes in the closing minutes. Edgar Bennett and Darrell Thompson scored on short runs and Chris Jacke kicked two field goals. San Diego (6-7), the defending AFC West champion, might have fallen out of the playoff picture.

Buccaneers 13 Bears 10 For host Tampa Bay (4-9), Mazio Royster scored on a 4-yard run, while Michael Husted had field goals of 38 and 42 yards set up by a fumble recovery and a 24-yard punt by Chicago's Chris Gardocki. The Bears (7-6) fell out of a share of first place in the NFC Central and played the second half without quarterback Jim Harbaugh (bruised right hand). Bills 10 Eagles 7 At Philadelphia, the Bills (9-4) struggled all day, then got two breaks and used them to hand Philadelphia (5-8) its eighth loss in nine games. Heath Sherman fumbled to Mickey Washington on the Bills' 29 to set up Frank Reich's touchdown pass to Pete Metzelaars with 3:44 left. Then Vai Sikahema fumbled the kickoff to set up Steve Christie's 34-yard field goal to win it.

It was Sikahema's second fumble of the game. Oilers 19 Browns 17 The Oilers (9-4) hadn't won eight straight in 32 years. If they make it nine with a victory at Pittsburgh next Sunday, they would clinch the AFC Central title. Al Del Greco kicked four field See ROUNDUP, Page 5.
