The ability to present a subject in a lucid, yet forcible and instructive manner is one of the prerequisites of a good teacher, and this ability coupled with a thorough knowledge of the subject makes a good teacher. The course in music has been arranged to give the teachers practical hints as to conducting the work of teaching music in their schools and also to present the Rudiments of Music with a view to preparing them for examination.

For the benefit of those who have not read the law relating to the teaching of music in the schools of Iowa, the following clause is quoted: Sec. l. Instruction in vocal music is authorized. That the elements of music, including when practical the singing of simple music by note, be taught in all the public schools of Iowa, and that all teachers teaching in schools where such instruction is not given by special teachers be required to satisfy the county superintendent of their ability to teach the elements of vocal music in a proper manner. Provided, however, that no teacher shall be refused a certificate lowered on account of lack of ability to sing.
