Jb A NAPLES DAILY NEWS Sun August 41 974 Section Marco Notebook Page 3R: jjT -v s' JfS i- s'lfcfc 4 PLAYTIME Reyes Sanchez right Is one of 82 Immokalee Community Action Migrant (CAMP) Day Care Center in youths working as part of a federal-state program for Immokalee The three youngsters with him are left to right mmmer youth employment He is working as a tutor at the Darrin Box Merle Odom and Lorene Jackson TUTORS These students are tutors at the CAMP Day ton Reyes Sanchez Alexander Davis the supervisor and Care Center In front is Ricky Jackson while in the back Mrs Thelma Adderly housekeeper and assistant superrow left to right are Ofelia Munoz Margie Dimas Lee visor Williams Sandra Handy Earthenia Strange Gloria Pres- Immokalee Work Program Doing Well By JOHN TIPPINS County Reporter IMMOKALEE Eighty-two Immokalee students are learning job skills and earning money through summer employment in the federal-state work experience program enacted in the county this year Immokalee has 82 of the approximately 150 students employed in the county through the program The rest are working the Naples and Everglades City area Mrs Florence Jelks principal at Bethune School in Immokalee is coordinator of the program for the Immokalee area She reports that the students who range in age from 14 through 22 are not only receiving good work experience but are also giving something to the community Under provisions of the law setting up the program the must work for public or non-profit making organizations A breakdown In Immokalee shows 35 are working at the various schools around the community 13 are with the Community Action Migrant Program (CAMP) nine work for the Division of Forestry and eight are at the Immokalee Day Care Center Five work at the state Agricultural Research Center four are with the Collier County branch library two each are at the Collier County Health Clinic state employment office and the food stamp office and one each are at Flroida Rural Legal Services and the mental health clinic The jobs vary from maintenance type work for many of those employed at the school to get the facilities in shape for opening later this month to secretarial functions performed in offices Some of the most rewarding jobs are those for the students who are working this summer as tutors for the CAMP day center at Our Lady of Gaudalupe church The students help children from migrant families ofter taking them of field trips and supervising recreational activities One side benefit Mrs Jelks reports is that some of the students have been offered jobs either during the school year or after graduation because of their work this summer The program is administered locally through the Florida state employment service with the funding coming from the US Department of Manpower Administration The new program is called Rural Area Work Experience Placement Program of Summer Out of School Youth and received its backing from the federal Comprehensive Employment Training Act (CETA) which became law last December Besides being between the ages of 14 and 22 the students must also be registered in a school and the family income must not be above a figure set by the Department of Labor based upon the size of the family The salary is $2 an hour for a 40 hour work week Immokalee was able to add about 25 more students to the program when the county received 50 additional slots about three weeks ago Mrs Jelks noted that without the program many of the students would not have jobs this summer HELPING HANDS Alexander Davis is shown with his group at the CAMP Day Care Center Being taught how to make a key chain are left to right Don Green Junior Dimas Javier Calderon Jerry Daniel and Byron Pray SUMMER LIBRARIANS Deborah Wilder left and Constance Wilder are two of the four nftHiPrt working at the Collier County branch library fi summer Here they are making signs in preparation for a visit to the library by children -m Frostproof Photos by Tippins rWjx -4 If TEACHER AND STUDENTS Ricky Jackson far right Washington and Anthony Scott In the back row left to has a large class under his tutoring at the CAMP Day Care right are Blanca Montez Mercedes Sanchez Elizabeth Center In front Is Martha Sanchez while in the second row Roll Margaret Medina Stephanie Banes Marldson Minor left to right are Sonya Madina David Johnson Cassandra and Rosaro Perez HOF DOWN Oscar Loya George Leal Fidel Alvlar and the Division of Forestry In Immokalee They are fourofnlne Victor Salazar left to right work on the grounds at students employed In the program at the forestry office mmMmmm.
