DAVID POLING DD The Season Is 12 Months Long You cannot live a perfect day without doing something for who will never be able to repay you John Wooden TIMOTHY A O'CONNOR Publisher THOMAS HAYER Executive Editor FRANK WILLIAMS News Editor MARSHALL WYATT Advertising Director JC FREEMAN Circulation Manager Sun Apr 15 1973 Predicting Drug 'Weakness' His team has just racked up another national championship UCLA is Number One again and the players coached by John Wooden are indeed household names In America Stars like Goodrich Alcindor and in about 14 months a redhead named Walton Success attracts potential stars and most schools would be pleased to have the third-string from UCLA represent them in any league Yet this is not recruiting luck or alumni cash that has created a winning dynasty in Southern California Much of this staggering achievement belongs to Coach Wooden who could teach philosophy and religion as easily as basketball defense and in many circumstances does In the new book "They Call Me (Word $595) the forceful dedicated career of John Wooden is told with conviction by writer John Tobin For many Wooden will seem like the supreme Eagle Scout of the troop To others a rigid taskmaster who watches the length of sideburns and snaps his fingers when a player's socks start to droop For a few he will be an unbearable square who cannot start a home game without waving to his wife in the stands But the force and energy and faith of this dominant basketball personality is worth knowing and saluting His 15 rules that make up his "Pyramid of (self-control poise leaves the shower and dressing room the cleanest of any team We pick up all the tape never throw soap on the shower floor for someone to slip on make sure all showers are turned off and all towels accounted for I believe it is a form of discipline that should be a way of life not to please some building custodian but as an expression of courtesy and politeness that each of us owes his fellow convictions and talk summarily Jail them tor his excitement over the Christian life But all is not success life is not just one grand winning streak stretching into the sunset When Wooden's team lost one year to Houston and another dose game to Notre Dame reporters asked the players what the big man had said in the closed locker room following the game Replied one towering center "He said hang your heads bellyache and walk with your head John Wooden's season runs all year and happily for many they are part of his great human team contempt of the Senate This Is not the normal way that At least one study indicates that there is Junior high school students who get poor grades and flout school rules are significantly more likely to use drugs during their high school years than more studious and orderly classmates This is one of the findings of a continuing five-year study of Boston elementary junior and high school students being conducted by Dr Gene Smith of Massachusetts General Hospital under a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health The study is looking for answers in three areas: i (1) Why some students become regular drug users while others merely experiment with drugs briefly or ignore them (2) how personality traits and academic performance serve as predictors of involvement with or disinterest in drugs (3) what changes occur in attitudes personality and behavior after the initiation of drug use In findings to date the best indicator of subsequent use of illegal drugs is rebelliousness toward authorities and rules Obedient children are the least likely to become drug users The more rebellious a child the greater his subsequent use of drugs is apt to be ranging from infrequent marijuana smoking through frequent marijuana use to multiple experimentation with and use of depressants stimulants LSD and other hallucinogens and heroin Other reliable predictors of future drug use are classroom LM BOYD Hernia Is Commonest An Independent FBI? that the networks listed I did not share his fear that this represented some sinister international conspiracy but was convinced instead that the lopsidedness resulted from nothing more mysterious and from some courts This intensely interested observer of the maturing of electronic news would invite a pause for applause In the networks and in almost 8666 Individual station operations around our
