on hand for the May 10-11 Washington hearing to be held by members of the House of Representatives Insular and Interior Committee The hearing will be conducted by committee chairman James Haley D-Fla on a House bill to set aside the Big Cypress area of South Florida for conservation and watershed purposes The hearing at the Collier County Courthouse will be conducted by officials of the Florida Department of Administration Division of State Planning Gov Reubin Askew has asked Florida legislators to set aside $40 million for purchase of the Big Cypress lands to encourage federal purchase CATCH UP WITH THIS HERO Chuck Seward is still one medal short It doesn't seem to bother Chuck but it bothers us proud to know guys like Chuck and like to keep the record straight Maybe you can help Chuck has one award coming the week of May 6 along with his friend Merrel Morgan "Be Kind to Animals Week" Chuck and Merrel were somewhat more than kind to a 1000-pound horse that fell into a canal off Shirley Street A passerby Robert Culbertson reported the trapped horse to the office and to the North Naples Fire Department A North Naples fireman turned up but he have the equipment to get a horse out of a canal SO CULBERTSON APPEALED to Morgan who runs an auto repair shop on Shirley Street off Pine Ridge Road and Seward who operates Motor Sales next door They took a wrecker truck with a lifting boom over to the canal brink and tried to hoist the horse out of the canal muck The horse was too heavy and the strain lifted up the front of the truck SO SEWARD AND MORGAN got shovels and they climbed down into that chill canal water and muck and began digging the horse out They labored for five long bone-chilling hours in the muck digging a way out for that half-ton horse Then they padded ropes with blankets and hooked the ropes to the truck winch and with the truck pulling and Seward and Morgan lifting they got the poor animal out of the water and onto solid ground THE HORSE WAS SO WEAK it stand Chuck Seward and Merrel Morgan feel so good either but they wrapped the horse in blankets and built fires to keep it warm through the night Now and then they walked it around to get the stiffness out of the poor legs This newspaper nominated them for the Bancroft Award and this week the state awards chairman Mrs Bonnie Lucas of Fort Walton announced they had won They had demonstrated she said rare compassion and willingness to give their time and back-breaking efforts It was truly a case of individual heroism courage and perseverance And the awards would be presented during Be Kind To Animals Week MRS HELEN EVANS of Bonita Springs read about the awards in this newspaper (where else) and she phoned to say she was glad to know Chuck was being recognized as a horse-saver but how come nobody had given him a medal for being a people-saver? It happened about a year ago she recalled and Chuck Seward was on his way to work when he saw a crowd gathered on the bank of the canal near the intersection of the Vanderbilt Beach-Bonita Beach roads He stopped to investigate and he saw a car that had run off the bank into the canal and it was sinking into the water and the muck and there were two people and a dog inside THE PEOPLE ON THE BANK were making excited noises but nobody was doing anything Chuck leaped into the water and swam to the car It was over his head on one side of the car and shoulder-deep on the other He had a terrible time getting the car door open and then he had a terrible time with the big collie dog which was trying to protect the woman and the disabled war veteran (her son it turned out) inside Chuck finally grabbed hold of the dog and hauled it out of the car now almost completely under water Then he pulled the woman out and got her to shore and went back for the disabled veteran son (apparently a paraplegic) Chuck carried him to shore and made sure he was okay Then he squeezed the canal water out of his clothes and climbed back into his own car and went to work NEVER SAID MUCH ABOUT IT Chuck didn't And Mrs Evans never saw anything about it in the papers And she thinks a guy like Chuck Seward deserves at least a little recognition because the world have enough people who are willing and able to save other lives We agreed heartily and we phoned automobile sales outfit and we asked him about the lady and her son and the dog and the canal Chuck just laughed and he said the story was true but he never bothered to get the name or her name or even the name And if a fellow help out a fellow human now and then it could get to be a pretty unhappy world SO THIS IS THE GUY getting an award for being kind to animals during Be Kind To Animals Week which starts May 6 And if we ever hold a "Be Kind To People it would be nice to give Chuck Seward a Good Samaritan Hero Award But we need the names of the mother and son (and even the dog) Chuck rescued from the canal 11 COUPON EXPIRES WED 4 18 73 BV TIN AtsotioM Bros Rain and snow spread across the western half of the nation today with temperatures in some areas dropping into the 20s Weathermen warned that the worst was yet to come Snow blanketed the Rockies in Montana and Idaho and neavy snow warnings were in effect for western Colorado and the mountain regions The eastern half of the nation enjoyed fair weather Temperatures before dawn ranged from 15 at Houlton Maine to 72 at Key West Fla I COUPON DM Washington MIMItsIng snow edv-doudy dear I ram NAPLES DATAV Personal Size IVORY SOAP 4 lor Pkg -24' EXPIRES WED 4 8 73 1 High 81 Low 54 No Rainfall Forecast: Highs today In the lower 8fs with lows expected In the middle Weather generally fair today with 8-13 MPH winds expected Water temperature at the Naples Pier ww 71 degrees Tides Moon Sun Tables Appear On The Sports Pages COUPON Fabric Protector SC0TCH6UARD 20 0s Can $1167 limit 1 COUPON EXPIRES WED 4 18 73 I COUPON For Wall Woshng BIG WALLY 140iCn (8) 81 Limit 1 expires wed i -is 73 COUPON!
