UHF CH. 29 APPLICATION Christian family TV sought for Cities 'A' non-profit religious corporation will battle it out with a commercial television station chain 'tbv the minneapoiis star ,978 61 I 1 Mi TT sW Z1 Willmar 1 Thorkelson LMJ for the right to operate a Twin Cities' area television station on hthe ultra high-frequency (UHF) channel 29. I A day before the Dec. 1 dead-! line, Faith Broadcasting Network filed an application with the federal Communications Commis-' lion (FCC) for a license to operate 1 "a Christian family station" on the UHF channel. I The other applicant is Bufford Television of Minnesota, part of the Bufford Group of Tyler, which owns four stations fn and Lubkin, Fort i Smith, and Mitchell-Sioux 1 Falls, S.D.

THE FCC has set aside two UHF channels for commercial television in this area 23 and 29. The FCC in 1969 granted a license to Viking Television St. Paul, to operate on channel 23. It has been delayed in going on the i'lr by tower location problems, and the earliest it could start broadcasting would be about a year from now, according to Irv-; ins W. Beaudoin, president.

the Viking and Bufford Interests are seeking to offer sub-i icription TV as well as the nor-! mal commercial variety on the two i UHF channels. Since only one subscription sta-' tion will be permitted in this area, his station would be "to bring the message of Christ to the more than 3 million people (in this area." He said a transmitter is being proposed for his station. Life said he is "looking" for $1.3 million to get his station going. As an initial fund-raising event, he has rented the Minneapolis Auditorium for 7 p.m. Dec.

18 for what is billed as "a holiday celebration to herald the coming of a full-time Christian family television station for the Twin Cities." Among the persons and groups participating, he said, will be Minneapolis Mayor Charles Sten-vig; Al Palmquist and his Midwest Challenge choir; several Gospel music entertainers, and author Mario Chapian. The Rev. Floy Cox, who participates irl a network of Christian TV minis-, tries, will be master of ceremo-' nies. Admission to the event is free. LIFE IS A former president of Life Educational Productions, a St.

Paul film company. Other officers of Faith Broadcasting besides him are Ron Morey, a Phoenix evangelist, vice-president, and Robert Nelson, a rancher and businessman secretary-treasurer. The 10 member board includes Palinquist, a Minneapolis police officer engaged In an evangelistic and anti-drug ministry. Life said he sent letters to about 1,100 local clergymen to attend a meeting Tuesday night at the Sil-var Camp, New Brighton, to hear plans for the proposed Christian station. He indicated disappointment that only about 70 came.

However, he said, he is count Viking has gone to the FCC, asking It to reject that part of Buf-ford's application. Viking is seeking exclusive right to subscription TV. Subscription TV is broadcast over (VHF) airwaves as a coded signal that can be received by a standard antenna. But a viewer can't see the program unless he has a special decoder box on his set to unscramble the signal. RICH LIFE, Fridley, an evangelist who is president of Faith Broadcasting, said that if his station gets the license it will broadcast family-oriented programs as well as spiritual messages.

He said his organization already has commitments from the major Christian TV networks, including the Christian Broadcast Network of Norfolk, the Praise the Lord Club of Charlotte, N.C., and Trinity Broadcast Network, Los Angeles to furnish programs for the proposed station. In addition, Life said, his station would set aside time for "local Mr. and Mrs. Kronholm after 1974 kidnaping RICH LIFE ministries" such as church services. Life maintained that the area needs a "Christian" station because of the amount of crime and violence in programs on existing stations.

She and her husband, Gunnar, a South St. Paul banker, said they consented to the film, "Held for Ransom," because they felt it could be a testimony that God answers prayer and could help those facing similar crises.

The film, produced by Ken Anderson Films, Winona Lake, is based on a book, "Held for Ransom," by Minneapolis author Ruth Peterman. The publisher, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, 111, gave her and Mrs. Kronholm the movie rights to the book, now in its fourth printing, with 36,000 copies printed. "WE DID the book because we wanted to see the Lord glorified," Mrs. Peterman said.

She said Mrs. Kronholm had agreed both to the book and the movie because she felt an obligation "to fulfill her part of the bargain with God." About 200 relatives and friends of the Kronholms and Petermans viewed the film at a premiere showing at Northwestern College, Roseville. After she is taken to abandoned house, the kidnajers ask her at least twice how she can be so calm. "I feel strongly God is in control of the situation" is one reply. Another time she answers, "I would be very upset if I veren't a Christian." The film also shows Kronholm praying often for his wife. Mrs.

Kronholm is shown "witnessing" to her abductcrs telling one, "Give your life to Jesus." When she is released after her husband has paid the $200,000 ransom, she tells the other abductor: "Jerry, just rcmerrber this: I forgive you and God loes you." The film ends with Mrs. Kron-holm's return to her home, and does not include the subsequent arrest, trial and sentencing of the two abductors James W. Johnson, referred to in the film as and Frederick (Fritz) Hel-berg, identified as "Jerry." Both are serving prison terms. Professional actors portray the Kronholms and other characters in the film, but at the end of the movie the Kronholms appear in an epilogue. IN THE EPILOGUE Mrs.
