John Goberman is the man behind the man behind the camera at "Live From Lincoln Center," the multiple Opera production of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide," on Nov. 12.

Looking back, Goberman said, "It's extraordinary that we've been on the air this long. I take that as a vote of confidence." This approach has won "Live From six Emmy Awards, with more than 20 nominations, plus two Gram-mys and three Peabodys. It also has generated some sharp criticism of the series, to the effect that Goberman and Co. have only succeeded in popularizing the arts by turning them into high-class variety acts, with little done to promote serious appreciation. "Weil, first, I've never understood what is wrong with 'popularizing' the arts," says Goberman, who began his career in music as a cellist.

Guests for these special evenings have included the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Opera, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Mostly Mozart Festival, American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet. 1 There can be no doubt that the broadcasts have provided many Americans with their first exposure to classical performances.
