"Our defense and special teams came on today," said Gault. "We knew they had one of the best kick-off and punt return teams around and we stopped that, and John Gayton (PC's punter) really got us out of trouble.

"It's a good win anytime you come out and don't play as well as you can and still win. But our cloud is there and it's going to rain on someone, hopefully next week at Elon." CLINTON There's an old coaching axiom that "the best offense is a good defense," and for the third time in as many weeks Presbyterian proved that, this time with a 10-3 SAC-8 victory over Catawba.

The Blue Hose's third consecutive victory wasn't pretty, most notably offensively, but it was a defensive masterpiece. The defense kept PC in the game, and in the end it was the kicking game that provided the impetus needed for victory. "Defense again," said PC head coach Cally Gault for the second consecutive week. "Offensively, again we got the advantage and we didn't take advantage of it, but I don't believe we made many mistakes defensively except for their draw and shovel pass." PC limited the Indians to 167 yards total offense, including 66 on the ground. Sixteen times Blue Hose defenders caught the Indians for minus yardage, resulting in a net-rushing loss of 34 yards.

Brad Spearman led the defensive surge with a dozen tackles and two pass deflections, while Charlie Hill and Charles Huff each had three tackles for losses. Offensively, the Blue Hose looked feeble for most of the contest, managing 138 yards total of- fense. They also hurt themselves six times with penalties. But where the offense failed to produce and the defense left off, the special teams took over. After both teams had exchanged a pair of punts and with 2:41 left in the first period, Huff stepped in.

The 5-foot-10, 188-pound senior grabbed a 34-yard punt from Catawba's Mark Raines, scooted up the middle, cut left and raced 42 yards for the game's only touchdown. The Indians regrouped and struck back on their next possession as Jeff Coulter capped a 10-play, 42-yard drive with a 34-yard field goal, cutting the Blue Hose lead to 7-3 with 12:11 left in the half. PC's final defensive gem of the afternoon came midway through the fourth quarter when Jimmy Edwards picked off a pass at the Catawba 41-yard line and returned it 14 yards to the 27. umevai inririiiriniiiTiiiii ruar-inin nnnn- 1111 nrriiiwi nTrk By Ernie Kastner The Greenville News JEFFERSON CITY, Term. Newberry College may owe Carson-Newman a medical bill after what happened Saturday afternoon. The Eagles, behind the running and pass receiving of a little scat-back named Kenneth Tyson, did a surgical number on the Indians and walked away with a 44-21 victory. "I honestly believe this team (Newberry) has a fear of success," said Coach Clayton Johnson. "It wasn't even the same team that played last week (and beat Mars Hill 38-6).

We get a great opportunity to be competitive against a quality opponent and we just fold." The NAIA's 14th-ranked Indians were never in the contest with the third-ranked Eagles. Ten minutes into the game, Newberry had only run one play from scrimmage an interception and trailed 7-0 when Carson-Newman's Aaron Saffell scored on a 3-yard run. It was the Indians' third possession before they could pick up a first down while Carson-Newman was adding to that statistical category regularly like every time it touched the ball. Doing most of the damage for Carson-Newman was Tyson. The 5-10, 185-pound sophomore from Knoxville is another in a long line of small, but rugged C-N running backs.

Tyson ran under, around and through Newberry for 208 yards; for good measure, he added a pair of touchdown receptions. Newberry had nobody with that kind of individual performance. An 11-yard touchdown run by the Eagles' Ted Marcus put the Indians into a 14-0 hole early in the second quarter, but a touchdown late in the period was more damaging. That touchdown a 92-yard gallop by Tyson came with the Eagles trying to run out the clock deep in their own territory. When the play started, it looked like just another off-tackle play, but a cut here, a cut there, and a couple of swivels later, Tyson was gone.

So was Newberry's chance to crack into the NAIA's top 10. Instead, the Indians must regroup and keep going because they're still not out of the race for the South Atlantic Conference title. Two of the three teams picked to contend Carson-Newman and Newberry have both lost a conference game while Elon, 2-0 in the league despite Saturday's loss to Guilford, still has to play Newberry. But conference titles weren't on Johnson's mind after his team had lost its second lopsided decision of the year. "We had no aggressiveness or interest in what was going on whatsoever," said Johnson.

"I don't understand why we weren't ready to be competitive, but we weren't." The Eagles didn't have that problem. "I don't remember our offensive line ever knocking people off the ball like they did today," Carson-Newman coach Ken Sparks said. "That's why our running backs, especially Kenneth Tyson, did so well. Sophomore tailback Jeff Beathard rushed for 97 yards and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass to pace undefeated and Towson State University to a 15-8 victory over visiting Wofford College at Minnegan Stadium Saturday night. Beathard caught a 16-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first quarter to cap a 90-yard, 13-play drive which put Towson ahead by 6-0 as kicker Jerome Nolan missed the extra point.

Nolan made up for his missed conversion in the second quarter by kicking a pair of field goals to give Towson a 12-0 lead at halftime. Wofford's offense came around with quarterback Dennis Williams taking over. On his second offensive series of the game, he fired 54-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Freddie Logan. Tim May's conversion run drew the Terriers to within 15-8 midway through the third quarter. Wofford Towson State I 15 Towson St.
