8B vThc tlnrrmnllr Nru CAROLINA STYLE Wednesday, July 3, 1985 Continued from PagelB TV fire knocked Channel 4 off the air for about two hours. WFBC-AMFM, whose building is adjacent to TV-4, had its signal interrupted twice for a total of 15 minutes. Fred Gent, the 6 p.m. news producer, was at home when he got the word. Gent hurried over, thinking it was "a little trash fire." "When I drove up, the street was blocked," he says.

"I saw smoke in the newsroom, and I thought, 'Uh Ms. McCarthy said the news gave her a sinking feeling. "When I heard that the fire started in the ENG equipment room, my heart dropped," she says. See Fire, Page12B and grounds superviser Bob Manning. King and his staff were largely responsible for getting NewsCenter 4 on the air the night of the fire.

They also worked their magic during the next few days when power failures and balky equipment might've prevented it. The fire began around 8 p.m. in a storeroom, the result of an electrical malfunction. NewsCenter 4 reporter Dick Anderson was upstairs in the engineering room when he and his co-workers discovered that TV-4 was burning. He grabbed an extinguisher.

I got as far as the door of the prop room," Anderson says. "It was so hot, I couldn't go any farther. I decided to let the professionals handle it." Units from the Greenville Fire Department and Parker Fire District responded quickly. However, the ager Tom Estrada. Channel 4 also lost its kitchen set, and the sets for the Danny Ford and Cliff Ellis shows.

Gene Hawkins, an artist with TV-4's creative services department, was named the station's "damage control officer." Since June 23 he has coordinated the clean-up and reconstruction. "We have a tendency to save a lot of stuff," Hawkins says. "It pays off sometimes." Station spokesmen say they won't know the full extent of the damage until much later, when frayed wiring and partially damaged equipment gives out. However, other areas of the building at 505 Rutherford and most of the expensive equipment therein, was virtually untouched by smoke or water. WYFF-TV got offers of assistance from its network-affiliated competitors, WSPA-TV in Spartanburg and 13-WLOS in Asheville.

Independent WHNS-TV, Channel 21, offered the use of its production facilities. NewsCenter 4 also got "loaner" equipment from its sister stations, WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, N.C., and WLKY-TV in Louisville, Ky. "That saved our lives," says news director Mary McCarthy. What has emerged in the past 10 days is a litany of praise, for unsung heroes such as Hawkins, chief engineer Bob King; engineer Peter Danciu, who's in charge of NewsCenter's live capability; and building Today Show to 50 states," Smith says. The "agonizing part of it" has begun for station personnel, many of whom have been working 12-, 14-and 18-hour days, according to Smith.

"It is getting more difficult to keep everybody's enthusiasm up," he says. "The tedium is setting in, and everybody's getting terribly tired." Station management is doing its part by distributing "That's the Spirit" T-shirts and having everyone sign an "I-was-there" card that will be framed. The clean-up is being handled by three contractors two local companies and one from Texas, Smith says. Building contractors, architects and engineers are working to rebuild the production studio and other damaged areas. The consensus is that WYFF-TV was lucky: No one was injured, and the losses could have been far worse.

Damage has been estimated at $2.5 million, but that likely is a conservative guess. "That's not at all scientific," Smith says. "Nobody's done a whole lot of running anything through a calculator or adding machine." Among the major items lost: five complete cameraremote units, with microphones, lights, batteries and other accessories; much of the repair equipment used by the news department; Charlie Gertz weather computer; a $15,000 cameragraphics generator that was delivered about three weeks ago. One studio camera and the main lighting board also were damaged, according to production man- W.J The Ark Going Before Meant Victory!
