Olson had lived as a suburban mom while on the lam for nearly aquarter century before her arrest in 1999.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Larry Fidler sentenced her in January to 20 years to life in state prison, but warned her that the state board has the authority to make the final decision, and that she could spend the rest of her life behind bars. The board has the power to set sentence because the crime was committed before 1977, when California sentencing laws changed. The board is permitted to hold hearings to determine whether such inmates are and should have their sentences extended. Asthe hearing started, Olson began crying and wiped her eyes. When the commissioner asked her if she was OK, she responded, not, but not much I can do about LAPD Officer John Hall, who narrowly escaped death from one of the bombs, said, has taken 27 years to bring this defendant to justice for this cowardly act would hope you would protect our citizens from terrorists both past and Retired officer Marty Feinmark, who found the other bomb beneath an unmarked car, echoed those thoughts.

The board heard arguments from both sides and asked Olson several questions, including why she fled. Her attorney, Shawn Chapman, responded, saying that her client left town before an indictment was issued, but acknowledged that she fled because she saw her friends and brother arrested for crimes committed by the SLA. Chapman also said that Olson admits she helped the SLA, but denies making pipe bombs or planting them beneath police cars.

Chapman urged the board not to extend the sentence, arguing that her client has been a law-abiding, peaceful and productive member of society since the crimes were committed. Because of her notoriety and escape potential, she does not have access to educational or vocational programs, prison officials said. She is also on a waiting list for a job at the prison.

The prison houses about 3,150 inmates, including 14 women on death row. After hearing, Chapman said she plans to appeal the decision, which is expected to become final in 90 days. Law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Timothy Belden, the former head of trading in En- Portland, office, is to plead guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The prosecution of Belden is the third of an Enron figure. Afederal grand jury in San Francisco has been weighing criminal charges related to the energy crisis, according to reports. ASenate panel has long believed Belden to be the mastermind behind price manipulation. SANTA ROSA County Pathologist Fired After Resume Review Sonoma County has fired its second pathologist in less than a year in a move that could delay several murder trials. Dr.

George Bolduc was dismissed authorities cited misstatements in his resume as the reason. Sheriff Jim Piccinini and Dist. Atty. Mike Mullins said they found problems in work, but they plan to hire a pathologist to review his major cases. STOCKTON County Paying Defense Attorney San Joaquin County is paying the bill for a defense attorney for Sheriff Baxter Dunn, who is under investigation by a federal grand jury for possible civil rights violations, according to the Stockton Record.

Supervisors approved hiring private criminal attorney to defend Dunn. The contract states that Michael Capizzi of Fullerton a former Orange County district attorney only bill the county for work done concerning actions during the 1998 arrest of Eric Fuess, then 23, who was taken into custody after a standoff with authorities in Manteca. STOCKTON Statements Allowed in Murder Case ASan Joaquin County Superior Court judge Tuesday denied a defense request to suppress statements made by 21-year-old Sarah Dutra, who is accused of helping 36-year-old Laren Sims Jordan kill her husband. Defense attorney Kevin Clymo argued that statements Dutra made hours before she was arrested in the slaying of Sacramento attorney Larry McNabney should not be allowed into court because she was unlawfully seized by authorities. Dutra is accused of helping Jordan poisonher husband and buryhis body in a San Joaquin County vineyard.

If convicted, Dutra faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. SANTA BARBARA Compromise Reached on Oak Tree Protection County supervisors approved limited protection for valley oak trees on agricultural land, a compromise after five years of acrimony between the rural northern county and the urban south. The regulations let owners of large ranches fell up to 19 of the trees every 30 years without having to replace them. They can cut up to 154 valley oaks every 30 years without a permit, as long as they plant 15 young trees for each one removed. From Times Wire Reports IN BRIEF Start your day with a fresh plate.
