Talk Shows By Chris Pasles Times Staff Writer San Francisco Opera general manager Lotfi Mansouricreated an opulent production of Franz Merry as his swan song last yearwhenhe ended his 13-year tenure at the company. He commissioned new English dialogue by playwright Wendy Heidi and new English lyrics by a team of writers and directed the staging himself. PBS was on hand to tape a performance in the War Memorial Opera House, which will be broadcast tonight(9 p.m.

KCET). Critics were unimpressed with updated dialogue, even less impressed by the lyrics by Christopher Hassall and Ted and Deena Pufferand exasperated with emphasis on silliness and shtick. And as the production makes the transition to television, things get better. Gary for the small screen in particular adds problems of its own. The camera work is often busy and restless, shifting from disorienting close- ups to wide-angle shots and cutaways, particularly when the stage is full.

The dance sequences suffer the most, with legs and arms amputated and dancers flying in and out of the frame. Still, Amanda McKerrowand John Gardener, the central couple, manage to remain elegant. The camera also captures the strenuous efforts to project in a big house, immortalizing their shouting lines, such as last, we are Their English, already marred by put- on accents to reflect the various national origins, on occasion is obscure. Still, there is triumphant music. Yvonne Kennyas Anna, the heroine of the piece, sings melting lyricism.

Bo the hero Danilo, breaks hearts with his version of the song of the two royal children who loved but parted. Gregory Turaymay not have the most glorious tenor, but he sings songs with persuasive ardor. Angelika Kirchschlageris always vocally gorgeous as Valencienne. The waltzes, even under conductor Erich bland hand, remain irresistible. But a long haul to get to these highlights. TUNED IN Despite the music, barely survives its update LARRY MERKLE HEROIC PERFORMANCES: Yvonne Kenny is Anna, the heroine of Merry and Bo Skovhus plays Danilo.

no longer a phenomenon, but has turned into a very dependable performer for CBS. The finale of the fifth edition, drew 24 million viewers Thursday. The one-hour reunion that followed had 20 million people watching, making both shows the most popular of the week, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was less than half the 51 million people who saw Richard Hatch win the first $1 million prize in August 2000. Judging from the blistering comments by fellow contestants during the final tribal council, used car salesman and sometime soft-core porn actor Brian Heidik may be the most villainous champion since Hatch.

The final episode led CBS to an easy ratings win among all viewers and, for the first time this season with the 18-to-49-old viewers most advertisers seek. In all, CBS had the top four shows of the week, and seven of the top 10, although the network mostly offered original episodes against repeats on the other networks. which may have aired its last original episode last week, just missed the top 10 with 13.3 million viewers. NBC has canceled the show, but its executives have admitted to second-guessing that decision. Arepeat was most popular show, underscoring the importance of the surprise deal last weekend to bring the show back for 18 episodes next season.

It finished in sixth position. The Night contest between the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans was top-rated show of the week, in fifth place. Among the special holiday- themed programs, repeat of the TV Movie Town Without fared best, ending up in 26th place. World of movie Be Home for finished in 35th place. For the week, CBS averaged 12.7 million viewers (8.2 rating, 14 had 10.2 million viewers (7.1, 14) and CBS Evening averaged 8.6 million (6.1, 12).

Aratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or of the estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show. Associated Press share). NBC had 9.2 million viewers (6.2, 10), ABC had 9.1 million (5.9, 10), Fox had 6.4 million (4.0, 7), UPN had 3.8 million (2.3, 4), the WB had 3.4 million (2.1, 3) and Pax TV had 1.4 million (0.9, 2). Nightly won the evening news race, averaging 10.9 million viewers (7.6 rating, 15 share).

News makes it an easy win for CBS National Nielsen Viewership Here are the rankings for national prime- time network television last week (Dec. 1622) as compiled by Nielsen Media Research. They are based on the average numbers of people who watched a program from start to finish. Nielsen estimates there are 272.04 million potential viewers in the U.S. age 2 and older.
