Sammy's Takes City Title Sammy's Pizza, behind the one-hit pitching of Steve Miley, won the Major League softbali championship Monday night at Carson Park. Sammy's defeated South Barstow St. Merchants, 1-0, in a playoff for the first round title The two teams had tied with 7-1 records in regular round play. Sammy's took the second half outright and thus are the league's season champion. Miley hooked up in a brilliant pitcher's duel with loser Mike McMahon.

Despite the 50-d e- gree weather, both hurlers were sharp. Sammy's scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third when Mgr. Ted a and scored on Harv Tomter's two-out double to right- center. The only hit. off Miley was Ron Flynn's line-shot single to center with the two out in the sixth.

Miley struck out four and walked three. McMahon allowed five hits, but struck out nine and walked only one. Tomter got two of the hits off McMahon, Fred Golden added a double and Jon Wensel and Lahner singles. Sammy's threatened in the second when Tomter singled and took third on Golden's double with no one out. But McMahon bore down to retire the side.

Flynn's hit carne with two out in the sixth and went for naught when drive Fritz Gutsch's down the left long field foul line was caught for the third out. Flynn and McMahon drew walks earlier and reached second base, but could gel no further. Both teams qlayed errorless Miley Tomter ground ball up the middle. Barstow second baseman Norm Gutsch threw out Bill Rowlett on a grounder on the rightfield grass in the fifth for another fine play. The game winds up the local softbali season.

Shortstop Lahner cutl down a possible Barstow rally' in the top of the seventh when he went in back of second to throw out Porky Madson on a Dodgers Turn on Jaster By MIKE RECHT Associated Press Sports Writer George Stone welcomed cousin Cecil Upshaw with open arms and Upshaw turned out to be the perfect relative. But not everyone has surh relations. Larry Jaster, for example, usually has a smashing time with his Los Angeles Dodger cousins, but when he put out his arms to them Monday night, they kicked him out of his own house.

Everyone was barely seated in Busch Memorial Stadium when the normally quiet Dodgers drove Jaster out with eight runs in the second inning, and went on to wipe out the St. Louis Cardinals 10-1. It was only their second victory in nine decisions against Jaster, who shut them out a record five straight times in 1966. But for Stone and Upshaw well, they had as good a time as they did last Monday when Upshaw came in and saved a victory for Stone and the Atlanta Braves. This time, the Braves beat San Francisco 2-1 as Upshaw rescued Stone by putting out SAN FRANCISCO ATLANTA ab bl ab bl Bonds rf 3010 Flou cf 4110 Hunt 2b 3000 Mlllan 2b 3000 Mays cf 4111 HAaron rf 4030 McCoVey Ib 4010 Torre 4011 Hart 3b 3000 RJohnson 3b 3 0 0 0 Dlttz 3000 TAaron If 3110 JAlou If 3010 Luin If 0000 glanler si 3000 DJohnson Ib 3 0 1 0 Sadeckl 2 0 0 0 Martinez 3010 Davenprt ph 1000 Stone 3000 Herbel 0000 Upshaw 0000 Total 1 4 1 Total 30 2 8 1 SanFranclico ..000 100 Atlanta 10 ooo 2 two unwelcome hitters in ninth inning.

Elsehwere in the National League, Clay Dalrymplc's two- run single sent Pittsburgh away mad as Philadelphia topped the Pirates 8-7 in 15 innings. Houston was rained out of a twi-light douWeheader at Cincinnati in the only other games scheduled. The Astros led 3-0 after four innings when the rains came. Rookie Bill Sudakis, who wasn't around when Jaster was having his laughs with the Dodgers, was the rudest Dodger, turning the game into a rout after Jaster was gone. He climaxed the big noise in the second with the first grand slam riomer of his career, off reliever Dick Hughes.

With Jaster still around, Paul Popovich had singled home two runs and Wes Parker doubled 'or two more. Taking advantage of all this was Don Sutton, who cut down Cardinals on six hits to run his record to 8-14. Jaster, who was 2-0 against the Dodgers this season, fell to 9-12. The victory was the sixth in seven starts for Lo Angeles and helped them past the idle Atlanta 2. Atlanta 5.

The loss, on the other hand, was not all that bad for St. Louis, which still lowered its magic number for clinching the pennant to six as the second place Giants lost. Rookie Stone took care of the Giants with a four-hitter until he welcomed Upshaw with a tired arm with one out and one on in the ninth inning. Upshaw sponded by striking out Jim Hart and Dick Dietz. and Stone had his sixth victory against three losses.

Joe Torre singled home Atlanta's first run in the opening inning and another scored on a double play in the second, offsetting Willie Mays' 19th homer in the fourth. Dalrymple gave the boot to Pittsburgh after reliever Bruce Dal Canton opened the door by walking the bases loaded. The Pirates almost got back in when Chris Cannizzaro tripled in a run in the last of the 15th, but Chris Short struck out Maury Wills for the final out, Pittsburgh had tied the game with four runs in the ninth on four walks, a passed ball and Roberto Clemente's two-run single. The victory was achieved, lowever, only after the lalted a fourth-quarter Houston uprising, led by quarterback Pete Beathard.

The Chiefs won 26-21 but saw Beathard cut a 19-point Houston deficit with two touchdown passes while missing two others. Houston, held to only 29 yards rushing the first two quarters, caught fire with 11 minutes left in the game. Most prominent among those cut was defensive back Ross Fichtner, signed as a free agent by New Orleans after being dropped by Cleveland in the wake of a racial incident. Fichtner, who is white, was a starting safetyman for the Browns until they dropped him and guard John Wooten. The moves stemmed from a golf tournament arranged by Fichtner to which the Browns' Negro players were not invited. Wooten is now with Washington. The statements and misunderstandings started last week when Coach Tom Fears said he was assigning Taylor to special team kickoffs and return squads.
