Fouts, 36, who is entering the final season of a six-year deal, gave up all contractual guarantees beyond 1987 in return for last November's settlement, a newspaper said Tuesday. The 15-year veteran reportedly received his entire $750,000 base pay for last year's strike-interrupted season along with $375,000 he was guaranteed for 1988 and an unspecified bonus. World record set Janet Evans of Placentia, set a world record in the 800-meter freestyle Tuesday on the first day of the U.S. Swimming indoor national championships at Orlando, Fla. Evans was timed in eight minutes, 17.12 seconds and now holds world records in the 400, 800 and reestyles, the most by any American woman since Debbie Meyer in 1968.

East Germany's Cornelia Ender held three world records simultaneously in 1976. Cuba still may join Games The president of the Pan American Sports Organization said Tuesday that Cuba has shown "encouraging signs" that it still may participate in the Summer Olympics next September in Seoul, South Korea. Mario Vazquez Rana of Mexico said, "There are indications, let's say encouraging signs, that could bring about a change in the Cuban position" and reverse its decision not to go to the Summer Olympics because North Korea is not co-hosting the Olympics. Elliott released from hospital Stock car driver Bill Elliott was released Tuesday from Atlanta's Crawford Long Hospital, where he was treated for a shoulder injury suffered Sunday in the NASCAR Motorcraft 500 race at Atlanta International Raceway. Elliott, 32, crashed into the wall with 10 laps remaining in the race, and his status for this weekend's TransSouth 500 at Darlington is not known at the time.

Only Sheehan and Charleston native Beth Daniel remained of a 10-player field when they began play on the par-4 14th hole of the Moon Valley course. Daniel, a former Furman golfer, missed her par putt and Sheehan tapped in a par 3-incher to win $5,000.

Daniel got $2,000. The format was different from others in that a portion of the field was eliminated on each hole. After the first hole, only the low three players and ties went on, and after the second hole, only the two lowest plus ties continued. Starting with that third hole, the survivors faced sudden death. The shootout was being played on the back nine of the par-73 course, so the 14th hole was the fifth in the series.

Berger in tourney Former Clemson tennis star Jay Berger, of Plantation, is among those who have committed to play at the 1988 U.S. Clay Court Championships to be held at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms April 25-May 1. Asheville, N.C., residents Tim Wilkison and Lawson Duncan have also agreed to compete in the tournament. Spring training Former Clemson baseball player Denny Walling collected a hit and batted in a run for Houston in the Astros 4-2 loss to the New York Mets in Tuesday's exhibition action. Anderson native Jim Rice had two hits on four at bats and knocked in three runs in the Boston Red Sox' 10-4 win over Detroit.

Rice is the only active baseball player to have hit more than 300 home runs and whose career batting average is .300 or higher.
