April 17. 1991 Green Bay Press-Gazette Historic GM concept cars on exhibit at museum General Motors Design Staff is lending sev eral examples of its legen cases for the creative talents of the corporation's designers, engineers and stylists. Between 1938 and 1956, a total of 36 dream and expert-mental cars were created by GM and exhibited to millions. The first GM Dream Car was introduced in 1938.

World War II interrupted the otherwise steady stream of Dream Cars that followed. In 1951, Mr. Earl wheeled out the Buick XP-300 convertible. This car has a body of aluminum that was louvred along the rocker panels. It features many engineering accomplishments of the time: a 335-hp supercharged V8 engine, built-in hydraulic jacks, dual four-wheel brakes, and safety belts.

The Firebird I is the first gas turbine auto ever built and tested in the United States. It debuted at the 1954 Motorama as one of three Firebird Dreams Cars built dustry. The LaSalle was the first car to be completely styled by a professional designer. The success of the LaSalle design led GM's chairman, Alfred P. Sloan Jr.

to hire Mr. Earl. The company's Art and Color Section was then established, predecessor to the Styling Section created in 1940. The activity was renamed the GM Design Staff in 1972. Mr.

Earl was GM's first vice president in charge of Styling. He has been succeeded by only three others: William L. Mitchell, Irvin W. Rybicki, and Charles M. Jordan, current vice president of GM Design Staff.

Mr. Earl pioneered one of GM's most talked-about innovations the GM Dream Cars created for the company's annual Motorama auto shows. These cars, typically described as "laboratories on wheels," served as show The Mako Shark was an evolution of this Corvette heritage. The experimental car was completed in 1962 and served as the prototype for the classic 1963 Corvette design. The character of the car was achieved through its unusual paint scheme, which reflects the natural coloration of a Mako.

The car's shark-like profile includes a front grille that resembles a ferocious mouth, and side gills. The 1986 Oldsmobile Aero-tech is the most recent of the GM concept cars on display at the museum. Powered by a special turbocharged version of GM's Quad 4 engine, it was driven to a world closed-course speed record of 257.123 mph by auto racer A.J. Foyt. The sleek design puts the car low to the ground, with a clearance that ranges from one-half inch to 1 inch.

by GM. With it, Mr. Earl wanted to design an automobile that captured the feeling of the Navy's Skyray experimental fighter plane. GM's Research Labs had just put the finishing touches on a new GT-302 gasoline turbine engine. This "Whirl-fire Turbo-Power" engine, as it came to be called, was a natural for the Firebird I.

The second and third generations, Firebird II and III, also were powered by turbine engines. GM's second vice president in charge of Styling was William L. Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell held court from 1958 to 1977 and created an impressive portfolio of legendary cars, among them, the Mako Shark.

This car was inspired by a shark Mr. Mitchell caught while on vacation. Several years earlier, he had created the Corvette Sting Ray. dary design genius for exhibit at the Museum of Transportation in the Boston suburb in Brookline, Mass. Five cars with GM roots are displayed in the museum's "Future Cars of the Past" exhibit.

Harley Earl's 1927 La-Salle, the car that started it all for GM Design Staff, is featured at the exhibit. Also on display are two of GM's classic Dream Cars: the 1951 Buick XP-300 and the 1954 Firebird I. The 1962 Mako Shark Corvette Sting Ray, and the 1986 Oldsmobile Aer-otech I complete the GM repertoire. Before the first Dream Car, there was Mr. Earl's 1927 LaSalle.
