Chevrolet Mont Carlo Featuring GM and other fine cars Anderson 224-2141 tynr By Tom Layton Newt staff writer Six of the rising stars of 1989 have made places for themselves on The News' fifth annual all-state baseball team, elected by coaches. The young whippersnappers include Lancaster's Earl Cunningham, who reminds some coaches of a young Jim Rice; West Florence's Nate Lewis, who might also be next year's all-state quar-terback; Travelers Rest's Frankie Allen, who led the state's pitchers in victories and strikeouts; Stratford's Jeff Parnell, who hit .494 with eight homers; and Easley's Shawn Satterf ield and Georgetown's Scott Parsons, who led their teams to the AAAA finals.

Parsons is a sophomore; the rest are Juniors. Last year, there were only three underclassmen on the all-state team. Two of them repeated, Hartsville third baseman Aubrey Shaw and Mid-Carolina shortstop Calvin Edwards, and Shaw matched Cunningham for the most all-state votes, 11. Next closest were Richland Northeast catcher Brian Lawler, 9 votes; and Lexington third baseman Burke Cromer, 8. Georgetown's Mike Johnson, who won his first AAAA championship, was elected coach of the year with six votes from his peers.

Easley's Mike Barnes and Chesnee's Dean Jones each had five votes and Travelers Rest's Rockie Pitman had three. Votes were mailed to coaches of all 195 High School League baseball teams and were returned by 58: 23 of 50 in AAAA, 13 of 48 in AAA, 14 of 51 in AA, and eight of 46 In A. Slightly more Upstate coaches voted, 32-26, but Lowcountry players led the team, 10-7.
