2003:05:29:12:34:43 FAITH THEY SAID IT invoking any deity at a governmental meeting or event we bring religion into that meeting or Kathleen Morris, elder Wiccan high priestess, member of the Ecclassian Fellowship A6 Voice the United States as a Fortunately, our founders recognized the danger of state-established religion and rendered it unconstitutional. BUTCH HENDERSON senior pastor, Claremont United Church of Christ 8 In reading the Los Angeles Times article it seems the focus of this issue is more on the name of Jesus than on the idea of invocations in general. The name of Jesus Christ continues to stir controversy in our society. Why is it that people seem to be so afraid of the name Jesus? Did the court make the right decision to prohibit invocations at city council meetings? The court is also afraid of deciding on the he U.S. Supreme Court recently refused an appeal from Burbank officials on a court decision prohibiting city leaders from continuing invocations at City Council meetings that sometimes invoked the name of Jesus.

Burbank officials argued they have leaders from various religions present invocations before council meetings so that no favoritism. Did the courts make the right decision? 8 As a passionate separation of church and state advocate, I am in complete agreement with the present court ruling. Unfortunately, and sometimes embarrassingly, the major proponents of government prayer are Christians, the same ones who persist in referring to use of the name of Jesus. If one cannot refer to specific deities in prayer what is the purpose? If prayer is to be watered down to the extent of not mentioning deities, who is one praying to? To expect a court to understand the importance of prayer is too great an expectation. No, it was not the right decision, but this is only another in a long line of decisions that take important religious freedoms away from people freedoms that our constitution never intended to take away.

PASTOR GARY KEITH Life Bible Fellowship Church, Upland 8 The courts made the right decision regarding the invocations at city council meetings. We have a long-standing history of complete separation of church and state in this country as well as a long history of freedom of religion including the freedom NOT to have or practice a religion if that is your preference. By invoking any deity at a governmental meeting or event we bring religion into that meeting or event. I have absolutely nothing against honoring deity (indeed as a pagan I honor many) in the appropriate setting. A governmental meeting is not the appropriate setting.

Rotating the religion of the moment at each meeting does not make it OK to have a religious event at each meeting. These are meetings of a governmental body and as such are not the place for anything of a religious nature. Ithink a government official should be guided by his or her own conscience, the desires of their constituents and that private prayer in the manner of their own choosing is probably a good practice for them. Public praying, other than in the of your choice or in the privacy of your home, is inflicting your religion on others who, while they might be tolerant of your prayer, have very different ideas of what is appropriate communication with a deity and even whom the deity is. To avoid showing apparent favor to any one religion or group of religions we need to keep a rigorous separation between practice of any and all religions and government.
