HR Coleman (S). Tee Young's sixth-inning double broke open a tight game and gave Laurens High a 5-2 victory over Eastside Friday night. The victory gave the Raiders (18-1) the Region 1-AAAA championship for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in six years. Three Laurens batters walked in the sixth, and after one scored on a wild pitch, Young followed with his two-out, two-strike double. Laurens first two runs also came as a result of walks, followed by Robbie Douglas double.

Eastside pitcher Chris Snyder was otherwise sharp, allowing only one other hit, one other walk, and striking out 14, raising his total to 130 in 80 innings. Thomas Stewart of Laurens allowed only five hits and struck out seven. He was in trouble only once, in the fifth inning when East-side tied the game 2-2 with two walks, a single, and Andy Carter's two-run double. But he escaped with a popup and two grounders. Northwestern A tournament: Dixie and Blue Ridge both won first-round games with rallies in the bottom of the seventh innings. Semifinals will be played Saturday at Ware Shoals: Landrum vs. Ware Shoals at I p.m.; Dixie vs. Blue Ridge at and the winner of the first game vs. the loser of the second at 6.

The Dixie-Blue Ridge winner will advance to Monday's conference championship and will also automatically qualify for the state playoffs. Blue Ridge beat Ware Shoals 2-1 when Eric Nix doubled and scored on a throwing error. Nix also was the winning pitcher. Dixie beat Landrum 2-1 when Johnny Sullivan drove in Marcus Miller with a two-out seventh-inning single. Jim Byers struck out five and walked four in pitching a two-hitter for Dixie.

Staff, wire reports In Chattanooga, Furman has put itself in position to end Tennessee-Chattanooga's eight-year reign as Southern Conference tennis champion. Furman advanced seven of its nine players to Saturday's championship rounds and opened a four-point lead on Chattanooga after Friday's semifinals. Furman needs three more victories Saturday to clinch the title. Furman will meet Chattanooga in five championship flights and two consolation finals. Long iump White 21-11, Galloway Pickens County records and tied two others Friday night as it sweep the 13th annual county track and field championships at Liberty High. Daniel's Dobbie Anderson tied Jeff Moon of Pickens as the most valuable runners in the boys' meet, and Lewis Clarkson of Easley was chosen most valuable in the field events.

Most valuable girls were sprinter Donna Jackson of Easley and jumper Rita Jackson of Daniel. Eric Underwood of Daniel lowered the record for the 110-meter high hurdles to 15.0 seconds, and teammate David Abernathy tied the record in the 300-meter hurdles by running 41.6. Daniel's Todd Scott, Troy Artis, Albert Fleming and Anderson knocked almost a second off the 400-meter relay record, winning in 43.3 seconds. Girls' records were set by Easley's Jackson in the 200 and 400, Daniel's Jackson in the long jump, Liberty's Angela Dubose in the triple jump, and Daniel's Karen Roby in the high jump. Roby also tied the 300-meter hurdles record.

Johnson's nines of 32-34 gave him the lead over four players tied at 67 Jim Begwin of Oklahoma, Scott Medlin of Miami of Florida and Chris Kite of Wake Forest. Clemson had a 10-under-par 278 total for its 1-shot advantage over Wake Forest, with three other teams also nipping at the Tigers' heels Miami of Florida at 280, Oklahoma State 281 and Oklahoma 282. Trailing the top five in the team chase were Ohio State and Georgia at 284, Louisiana State 288, Georgia Tech, Auburn and Georgia Southern 289, Florida State 291, Mississippi 295, Tennessee 297, Michigan State 299, South Carolina 304, Murray State 306 and Mississippi State 307.
