Rathburn, a 6-foot, 210-pound halfback, was chosen in 1948. The first all-state metro player was halfback Gene "It's one of those things. Having been the leading ground gainer in the conference, I guess I should have been (named to the first-team all-conference squad)," said Rathburn. "But I have no hard feelings about it. Those things happen.

That's why awards have never meant much to me. "I was just happy to have the God-given talent to play the game. I loved football. "I remember one game against Manitowoc. They happened to have a good defensive end.

Mr. Ferzacca told me the first time I got the ball to hit him extremely hard and he would be afraid to tackle me the rest of the night. "I did that and he didn't Rathburn, 54, is president and owner of Star Electric Service in Green Bay. He lives in Oneida. After he graduated from West in 1949, Rathburn received a football scholarship to the University of Wisconsin.

He left the school later that year. Then he played semi-pro baseball and went into the serv- "Urn 1 mrff jfHM Now In Progress Closeout On All 1984 Isuzui Pups By Brian White Of th Press-Gazette When you think of area kids that are doing well in college athletics this year, certain names come to mind: Gregoire at Wisconsin. Nichol at Iowa. Nelsen at Northern Michigan. But the local player who established the most impressive set of credentials is the one with probably the fewest press clippings.

Tony Dollinger, formerly of Oconto, is rewriting the record books at tiny Evangel College in Springfield, and is catching the eyes of a few pro scouts in the process. Dollinger, a former all-Central Wisconsin Conference running back, is in his fourth year at Evangel, but because of a redshirt season has one year of eligibility remaining. This year, the 5-foot-ll, 201-pound back was the nation's leading rusher in NAIA Division I. In leading Evangel which has an enrollment of about 1,800 to its first winning season since 1977, Dollinger ran for 1,235 yards, averaging 137.2 per game. Evangel finished 5-4.

In the final game of the season, a 38-34 victory over Souteastem Oklahoma, he ran for 272 yards. During the season, Dollinger set 11 school records, including single season marks for yards, points (80) and all-purpose running (1,622) as well as career re-' cords for rushes (505) and yards I really felt I could do it," Dollinger said of his top ranking. "I was really shooting for the top five in the nation, but I worked really hard this summer. You never expect to be No. 1, but I thought there was a chance." Dollinger, who won four state track championships in high school, originally wanted to play football at Wisconsin, but "things got fouled up." "I really think I could have," he said.

"I always wanted to go to Wisconsin, but they felt my grades weren't good and they wanted to put me in a junior college. I didn't like the idea and came here. After one fall, I didn't hear anything from them." It's easy to scoff and put Dol-linger's feats off as small college stuff, but several scouts are making the trip to Springfield to check him out. The Dallas Cowboys gave him a workout last weekend and he has appointments with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings. Dollinger said he did "pretty well" in the Cowboys' test.

His results: vertical jump, 10-8 broad jump, 325-pound bench press, and 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash. "I think I can do a lot of things," he said. "That will help. There are not that many backs College nota faster than I am, and I can return kicks, too (he led the nation in kick returns also). It all depends on what a team needs." Tim Birr, from Pulaski High School, might have set some small school records of his own this year playing quarterback for Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown.

Might have? Well, the people at Maranatha aren't really sure. In nine games, Birr threw for 1,624 yards and 24 touchdowns. The school knows for sure that the 16 touchdown passes he threw to teammate Wayne Shephard was a state collegiate record for a receiver. But were Birr's 24 touchdown passes a school record? "Probably," says Maranatha Coach Car-lin Dempsey. "There are no accurate records kept," Dempsey said.

"But the best we can figure, it's the best we've had. Our statistician has been here a while and he says it's probably a record." University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Joel Gmack, a junior from Green Bay Southwest, was named to the Wisconsin State University Conference's second team as a kicker and honorable mention as a punter. Gmack was fourth in the WSUC in scoring (49 points), had the longest punt in the league (75 yards) and kicked three of the five longest field goals of the season (50, 49, 42). Chris Badciong, a freshman from De Pere Pennings, started six games at strong safety for Wichita State. Badciong made 38 tackles and broke up two passes for the Shockers, who had the No.

2 pass defense in the nation. Another freshman, Marty Johnson from Bay Port, started at comerback for Lawrence University and recorded three interceptions, including one in the end zone against St. Norbert. Jim Hobbins, a 6-6, 248-pound junior tackle from Green Bay Preble, was redshirt ed at Minnesota this year because of a broken foot he suffered on the first day of practice. He is eligible to play two more seasons, and is expected to start at right tackle next season.

"Coach (Lou) Holtz is so high on Hobbins that he was sick when Jim got hurt," said a Gopher official. "We think he'll be one of the best tackles in the Big Ten next year." Al Smith, a junior from Green Bay West, is a starting linebacker for UW-Eau Claire and will be a Blugold co-captain next season. In soccer, Marty Krack, a sophomore fullback from Pennings, was named UW-Whitewater's most valuable player and best defensive player. Floyd Rathburn wake up until the next day in the hospital. I knocked two fellas out on the same play." Rathburn had a tryout with the Green Bay Packers in 1953, but his chance to make the team slipped away when he tore a hamstring muscle.

From there, he played semi-pro football for a time. Then he went to school at the University of South Dakota, where he seriously injured his knee and was forced to give up football. definitely not agreed to anything with the Atlanta Braves." The Toronto executive said he also learned that Sutter and his agent rejected an offer from St. Louis that totalled $12,330,000 over 32 years. "I'm not surprised they rejected it," Gillick told The Star.

"It's way low like $30 or $40 million low." Quarterback Steve Young of the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League is believed to be the highest-paid athlete currently under contract with a deal worth $40 million. Sutter reportedly offered $48-million deal Long Beds, Short Beds, 2 Wheelers and 4 Wheelers, Automatics and 4 Speeds, Gas Engines and Diesels. All priced to move out now to make room for the '85s. 2, 1 984 TORONTO (AP) The Toronto Star said Saturday it has learned that relief pitcher Bruce Sutter will sign with the Atlanta Braves for what will amount to $48 million in deferred payments over the next 30 years, making him the highest paid athlete in any sport. Sutter's agent, however, denied the deal. The newspaper said the $48 million figure was based on a telephone interview Friday night with Jays Vice President Pat Gil-lick, who had met with Sutter and his agent, Jim Bronner, in Chicago before flying on to the annual baseball meetings in Houston. said he'd learned that the Braves' offer involved a complex system of deferred payments over 30 years that would pay Sutter $1.5 million a year for the first 15 years and $1.7 annually for the next 15 years.
