6 Hhe reetuuile Nnvs Monday, May 28, 1984 Duran forfeits WBA title to fight Hearns Underclassmen grab track field honors digest Davila and Garza, was wrong. A tropical rainstorm, which Davila called "holy water from the sky," turned the tide Saturday night and allowed the faltering fighter, now 48-7-1, to rebound and floor contender Felipe Orozco in the 11th round. Garza took a more standard route to victory in the twin title card billed as "The Battle On The Beach." The Super Bantamweight champion shook off several punches in the first round and responded quickly with a devastating third-round knockout of No.l challenger Felipe Orozco. All carries Olympic torch Muhammad Ali no longer floating like a butterfly but still as beloved in his hometown as when he was heavyweight champ of the world carried the Olympic torch Sunday on the first leg of its journey through Kentucky. The several hundred people who gathered to watch here began chanting Ali's name as the Olympic torch came into view at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Newt wire reports Roberto Duran of Panama, who has held three world boxing titles, will give up the World Boxing Association junior middleweight crown before a scheduled bout against Tommy Hearns, holder of the same title in the World Boxing Council. The WBA does not recognize the Duran-Hearns match and demanded that the Panamanian put his title at stake against the first challenger, Mike McCallum of the United States. But Duran did not accept the proposal. Duran is attempting to become the first boxer to to win four titles, a feat he failed to realize several months ago when he went up against undisputed middleweight champion Marvin Hagler of the United States, who won by a decision. Duran was the WBA lightweight champ and later won the WBC welterweight title.

At present he holds the WBA junior middleweight crown. The Hearns-Duran fight was Budd wins 1 ,500 race South African-born teen-ager Zola Budd went a long way toward realizing her dream of running for Britain in the Olympics when she beat a top-class field over 1,500 meters Sunday. Budd, who turned 18 Saturday and has surrendered her South African passport after gaining British citizenship, qualified for the United Kingdom championships final with an impressive victory in her heat in Wales. She held off her first serious competition and battled gusting winds to win in 4 minutes, 16.27 seconds, about 12 meters ahead of the field. Rain aids winner Trainer Benny Georgino had balked at the attention heaped on the unique, shorefront arena in Miami where Albert Davila and Jaime Garza would defend their WBC championships.

He said the open-air site would not effect the fights. Pedroza defends title Eusebio Pedroza of Panama successfully defended his World Boxing Association featherweight title Sunday by winning a unanimous decision over Angel Mayor of Venezuela in their 15-round fight in Mayor's hometown. Pedroza, making the 18th successful defense of the title he has held since April, 1978, battered the top-ranked challenger with lefts and rights to the head and body throughout the match. He never managed to floor the 21-year-old Venezuelan, however. Pedroza, who is 31, successfully won his battle to lose weight before the fight and just made the 126 pound limit. Mayor, a law student, suffered his first loss in 17 professional fights.
