The unit was formerly owned by N-ReN which operates a nearby plant that produces ammonium nitrate. The Rosemount area, including Koch's sprawling refinery, has long Minneapolis Star and Tribune had serious water-, air- and soul-pollution problems. There are old hazlandfills in the area, and several ardous-1 dumps and leaking studies are underway to determine the extent of contamination on tracts owned by several different industrial companies and institutions, including the University of Minnesota.

Although the MPCA considers Koch to be one of the sources of groundwater contaminants in the overall area, it says there are several other sources, including two landfills and other industries. Chemical contaminants have been found in several private wells just to the east of Koch's refinery, and the company is supplying bottled water to those families. Koch owns those residences. In time, crooks found a way to forge those credit cards, which is one of the reasons for the current security hysteria. The end result is more expensive security, which means we have to pay even more money for credit cards today to prove we deserve them. If there's any homily here it is merely to remind the security monitors of the immense capacity they have to deliver casual humiliations to people who warrant trust and have proved it. I don't think we have gone as far as we're going in the tests the system will demand. I think within a few years we will have to stand in front of a TV screen and recite name, Social Security number and the date of our baptism.

I think we will have to give three credit references, blow into a balloon and state our mother's street address. After which we will be accepted, if we can give our telephone number backwards.
