Relyea, said Thursday. Mrs. Relyea said she and her daughter were under the impression that the wearing of the bracelet during performances was prohibited by the rules and that she would be penalized if she did so. The executive committee of the Jaycee-sponsored pageant issued a statement during intermission of Thursday night's performance saying no contestant in this year's pageant has been denied the right to wear a POW bracelet. "It has never been the intention of Miss South Carolina Pageant to prevent anyone from wearing jewelry of religious, personal or patriotic significance.

"The Jaycees have long taken a strong position in support of immediate return of our country's prisoners in Vietnam and have affirmatively supported various efforts toward that end. "No contestant in this year's pageant has been denied the right to wear a POW bracelet during competition, nor has there been any indication that she should not do so. "Each contestant is absolutely free to make her own decision as to whether or not to wear a bracelet in support of this cause and certainly will not be penalized for doing so," the statement said. The pageant committee said the statement was prepared 'after reports were heard that one or more of the contestants had indicated concern about the wearing of POW bracelets. Greenville Jaycees especially regret any misunderstanding about the wearing of these bracelets.

For years contestants have received comments and advice from the production staff about the wearing of highly reflective jewelry such as rhinestone bracelets," the statement said. Miss Relyea's father is a retired Air Force colonel, and many family friends are now being held by the North Vietnamese, Mrs. Relyea said. "Debbie put the bracelet on with a vow and a prayer" that she would wear it until the prisoners are released, Mrs. Jim Creel, Miss Relyea's chaperone from Myrtle Beach, said.

Mrs. Creel also wears one of the POW bracelets. Mrs. Creel said when Miss Relyea came out on the runway during the evening gown competition Wednesday night, "her bracelet caught the light and sparkled like it was made of diamonds." Mrs. Creel said Miss Relyea brought extra bracelets to the pageant for other girls who might be interested in supporting the young women were told by pageant officials, Mrs.

Relyea said, not to wear the bracelets until the pageant is over because of a rule about no jewelry. Miss Relyea also wore the bracelet during the Myrtle Beach pageant. At that time, Mrs. Creel said, she told the Myrtle Beach Jaycees she would not take off the bracelet. "The town is behind her," she said, "because they support the cause." After hearing the statement from the committee, Mrs.

Creel commented that the contestants had been advised orally before the pageant not to wear jewelry. She also said that the pageant booklet given to the contestants states that jewelry should not be worn during performances on stage. Military Strength Pledged MIAMI BEACH (UPI) -George S.
