I otherwise served WMIN as an all-night disk jockey known as Hub Cap. "Merle was just hilarious," recalls Steve Cannon of WCCO radio. "He hated that squirrel and used to bat it around a lot." Edwards took some punishment too. "One of my sponsors was Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer," he recalled recently, "and of course the squirrel couldn't drink the stuff, so I had to do the sampling on the air. One day I picked up a big mugful to gulp down, and the crew had filled the glass with raw whisky." Edwards now is a radio-time salesman for station KSDO in San Diego, and also is well-known in that part of Southern California as the TV spokesman for car dealers and the like.
