"I can't guarantee one win," he told the caller as his eyes scanned an attention-begging desktop. "All I can guarantee is that we'll hire good people, and they'll be working hard." In his first full day on the job, those words fit well for Satterfield, who on the last day of 1985 took the job vacated by Dick Sheridan. In the process, he inherited two major rebuilding jobs.

He must first build a new coaching staff, one that will be centered around himself and assistant head coach Bobby Johnson. It will include former Furman quarterback Tim Sorrells and former Paladin defensive back Bruce Fowler, kicking coach Whitie Kendall and four others yet to be hired. When that is done and Satterfield hopes "to do it as soon as we can" he will begin building Fur-man's 1986 team. It must be designed without the luxury of 24 sen but some came from such places as Boston, Reno, San Diego, Wyoming and Hawaii. Satterfield had little time to return calls Thursday.

After meeting some prospective assistants, he planned to get home "long enough for a sandwich" and then make a 6 p.m. recruiting visit in Clinton. Satterfield and Johnson have contacted about 50 prospects in two days. Among those potential recruits, there is no evidence that the coaching change has hurt Furman's appeal. None of those contacted have lost interest in Furman in the past week, and "most have been real positive," said Satterfield.

One, Greenwood end Sammy Walker, became Satterfield's first building block Wednesday. He's a 6-foot-l, 205-pounder who was very high on the recruiting list before and after the coaching change. Walker, who was also recruited by Maryland, East Carolina, The Citadel, East Tennessee State and Presbyterian, informed Satterfield Wednesday that he will sign a Furman grant when the signing period begins Feb. 12. iors who played on the 12-2 team that ended its season 13 days ago.

That job will begin later than had been expected when Furman's players went home for the holidays. At the time, spring drills had been scheduled to begin Jan. 21. That schedule will be delayed. "I can't see us keeping the January spring date, I'll talk to the players Monday, and see what they want to do," said Satterfield, "but there's no need to rush into it just to get it over there are too many important things we've got to do.

I think it's much more important that we get our staff selected first and I've had time to work with them before we begin the spring drills." While the new date for those drills became uncertain, the constant ring of the telephone in Fur-man's football office Thursday made it obvious that Satterfield will select his coaching staff from a long list of interested candidates. The football office was bombarded with more than 100 phone calls Thursday, some of them from interested candidates and some from established coaches who were making recommendations.
