On the plaque near a 1921 popcorn wagon, for example, you learn It was built by C. Cretors and Co. of Chicago, was shipped on Feb. 9, 1921, to Ed Slnanian of Highland Park, and for many years stood In front of the old Michigan Central Railroad Depot You also are told that popcorn was unknown by the white man but was cultivated and used by the Incas of Peru for thousands of years. It is further explained that today most of the popcorn of the world is produced by farmers in Iowa, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

fet that serves three meals a day, $2.99 for breakfast and $3.99 for lunch or dinner. Very good food. And if you took your plane ticket to the Sands customer-service desk, they would give you a ticket good for a free dinner at the Garden Buffet. (One catch for the Sands' free meal was that you had to be over 21. It was the only place we had seen where the kids had to pay but the adults ate free.

Another inducement for the gamblers, who have to be over 21.) For evening entertainment, almost every casino has a show, and If you're careful you can be amply entertained by people you have seen on TV without busting the budget The big shows cost $25 to $30 or more per person, but there are plenty of others for less than $10, and In some cases the price includes a couple of drinks. If you are fond of the circus, you can hang around Circus Circus and watch free acts all day, after 11 a.m. Otherwise, daytime activities can involve driving around the area In your rental car, exploring such wonders as Hoover Dam and Lake Meade, Valley of Fire State Park (a geological marvel, mainly of sandstone, and containing Indian petro-glyphs), the Llberace Museum, Red Rock Canyon Recreation Lands, Mt Charleston Recreation Area, Spring Mountain Ranch, Bonnie Springs Old Nevada (a historic mining town with narrow-gauge railroad, museums, 531 Canada Canada Miles A print lifted from the original copy of the Declaration of Independence. Limos charge $2.50 per person, one way, to the strip, and for one or two people that's probably the way to go. A group of four or more will save a dollar or two by taking a taxi. A taxi should get you there faster, too, because a limo might have to stop at several hotels. When we arrived, the wait seemed shorter for taxis, too. If "you're concerned about weather, think of Las Vegas as another Phoenix; on summer days the temperature commonly tops 110 degrees, the.

humidity is extremely low and rain is rare. For comparison, the daily mean temperature (average of daytime high and nighttime low) in summer is 82 degrees F. and in winter it's 48. Whatever you do in Las Vegas! allow yourself some gawking time to at least look around the hotels and casinos. On the strip, don't miss Caesar's Palace (they tell me there's one restaurant In the palace where you pay $1,000 for a meal, another $1,000 for a bottle of wine it keeps out the riffraff).

And be sure to go downtown at night and take a walk on Fremont St. You will never again see such a sight as all those lights in so compact a space. Gawk to your heart's content, but enter the casinos at your own risk. A few folks do win big money, but all those plush casinos didn't get built by letting the customers win. And remember, this is a cheapie vacation.

The museum Is broken down into several divisions, with transportation being by far the largest and most popular. There are also sections on power and shop machinery (probably the least interesting to most people); agriculture (featuring the first mass-produced tractor); decorative arts (including a magnificent collection of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century furniture); home arts (detailed Illustrations of the development of among other things the vacuum cleaner nd the bathtub); and lighting and communications (from oil lamps through Edison's Incandescent bulb).

The museum also has a number of turn-of-the-century storefronts depicting early barber shops, cobbler shops and the corner drugstore, as well as a craft shop and Christmas store where you can buy splendid reproductions of originals owned by the museum. There is a place to eat (the Corner Cupboard), a museum theater with periodic presentations, a baby care room, and small sections on clocks and watches, jewelry, music, silver and pewter and ceramics. There are also plenty of benches scattered around to help you rest after walking for hours across the museum's polished wood floors. In the activities center children (and their parents) can enjoy hands-on displays that demonstrate how such things as the zoetrope (a form of early motion picture), the telegraph and the telephone work, youngsters also can ride old bicycles with tall front wheels and tiny rear ones. The Henry Ford Museum is a place where there Is a discovery around each corner, an exotic Item that will excite you.

Las Vegas also has an art museum and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has a natural history museum, an art gallery, a concert hall, a theater and a sports arena. For the sports or outdoor enthusiast, the area offers tennis, racquetball, bowling, water sports, snow skiing, golf, fishing, hunting, hiking and riding trails. Many of these attractions are free, but where admission fees are charged they are usually moderate.

The Llberace Museum, for example, charges $3 and Old Nevada charges $4, and both, of course, offer special rates for seniors and children. Hoover Dam Is especially interesting and economical. For $1 you get a 40-mlnute tour Inside the dam and down into the powerhouse; tours leave every 15 minutes. Gray Line and others offer guided tours to some of these attractions (the Hoover Dam tour runs something like $16 per person for a four-hour tour), or you can rent a compact car for less than $30 a day, plus gasoline. For getting around inside the city, bus service is quite good.

If you are going to fly out and rent a car, it probably would be wise to arrange to pick up your car at the airport. Otherwise, you will have to ATTHETOTALLYNEW HOLIDAY AIRPORT 2 FRI. THRU 2 P.M. SUN. ADD SUN.
