East USC defensive lineman Rickey Hagood was picked by Seattle and Columbia native Terry Long was 'grabbed by Pittsburgh in the fourth round.

South Carolina State's Barney Bussey went to Cincinnati in the fifth round. Clemson's Jim Scott went to the New York Giants and Fur-man's Emest Gibson went to New England early in the sixth round. Seneca native Clarence Kay went to Denver in the seventh round; arid Clemson placekicker Bob Paulling was an eighth-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals. S.C.

State defensive back Heyward Golden was a lOth-round choice of the New York Giants. In the early stages of the draft, the NFL attention was focused on defensive players and offensive linemen and that enhanced the earning potential of Russell, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound Orangeburg native who was the fourth player picked in the third round. "I saw Marion Campbell at the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame banquet, and he said, 'I'll be "looking forward to working with I didn't know what he meant, but here I am with the Philadelphia Eagles," said Russell. "I was just happy to be selected, period. I think it's an honor to be drafted over some of the players who might be considered better than me," he added.

"They told me I'm the type of young player they're looking for and that I've got my best football ahead of me. I'm just 20 years old and they say I can develop into a fine offensive tackle in the NFL. "They (Eagles) want to rebuild their offensive line. They have several veterans over 30 years old, and their all-pro tackle, Jerry Size-more, just retired," said Russell. "I think I have a fair shot to move into that position.

But whoever gets it will have to fight for it just like me." Russell plans to fly to Philadelphia Wednesday for a press conference. McSwain, a North Carolina native whose brother Chuck earned a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster last year, was one of five defenders picked by the Falcons in the first four rounds. "With his athletic ability, he was probably rated higher. He ran track in the spring, and did not have a chance to play spring football, which perhaps hurt him a little." said Falcons coach Dan Hen-ning. "We timed him at 4.5 (seconds in the 40-yard dash).

He has good size and is a hitter. If he's going to develop, he certainly is the type you want to see develop." In other years, third-round status the highest ever for a Furman player would have been welcomed bv any young man from Summerville. But in this unusual NFL draft year, four months after he had been a first-round choice in the United States Football League draft, there were greater expectations for Jennings. "I'm a little disappointed, but the draft is a funny thing. You don't know what is going to happen," said Jennings.

"I guess if I paid a lot of attention to the papers, I'd be very But it was a very 'defensive' draft. I was prepared for that." That was not as true for his attorney, John Campbell of Greenville. "Based on the information we (Campbell and Jennings' agent, Marvin Demoff of Los Angeles) had been getting from the NFL people, we expected Stanford to be picked in the first two rounds," said Campbell. "It was almost as if there was a concerted effort to take the glamor positions in the lower rounds. "It was a bizarre draft," added Campbell.

"It looked as if there was a snowball affect. In those first two rounds, it was obvious that they were taking defensive players that were not as talented as some offensive players that were available. "I felt that as soon as they started taking some offensive they'd take them all like Boomer Esaison, Jon Williams, Stanford, and Ernest Anderson," said Campbell, "and that's what happened. "It seemed like Esiason was a key to all the offensive people, and especially to Stanford. If Boomer had gone in the first round," said Campbell, "Stanford would have gone no later than 10th in the second round.

(Then) you'd have had in the second round what happened in the third." Jennings, Furman's all-time leader in rushing and scoring, plans to participate in the Bengals' mini-camp this weekend in Cincinnati where the head coach, Sam Wyche, is also a Furman product. He also said Demoff whose 1983 draft clients included John Elway, Dan Marino and Curt Warner would continue negotiations with the USFL's Michigan Panthers, who made him their first-round pick in January. Before taking Jennings, the Bengals grabbed Arizona linebacker Ricky Hunley, Maryland defensive end Pete Koch, North Carolina offensive tackle Brian Blados, and Esiason in the first two rounds. As the NFL clubs stocked their talent shelves with defensive players in those first two rounds, only two running backs were among the first 61 picks Notre Dame's little-used Gary Bell in the first round by Buffalo and Southern Colorado's little-known Herman Heard in the third round by Kansas City. Continued from Page 1 two outs when relief pitcher David Clay got two straight grounders, but the third grounder got through second baseman Sosa scoring Snider and leaving Rizzo at first.

Clay tried to pick Rizzo off, but threw the ball wildly and the Memphis center fielder wound up at third. A single by Bill Pecota drove Rizzo home. "We got a tremendous game from Marty Clary in the first game and I guess they (the Chicks) are saying they got a tremendous game from their pitcher (Reish) in the second," said Greenville manager Bobby Dews. In all, 17 of the 28 first-round choices were defensive players and so were the first eight on the second round making it 25 defensive players of the first 36. Of the 25, 10 were linebackers and nine were linemen.

While the USFL's influence was obvious throughout the draft, the NFL will try to get even in some measure next month in a supplement draft of this year's college players who already have signed with the spring-summer league. Late in Tuesday's draft, the Cleveland Browns traded their final four picks to Chicago in return for all three Bears' picks in that supplemental draft.
