If this thing of filling the papers with pictures of the families of candidates and the reading columns with lush about them continuous, the first thing anybody follow will organize a bachelor party, the paramount Issue of which will be to nominate none but bachelors for office.

Bryan will be the first Democrat to be defeated for President three times, but there are other Democrats who have been defeated more times for other offices Topcka Capital. This calls to mind that the Demo-etata of this county used to nominate John Preston for surveyor regularly very two years, and although he was reputable citizen and a good surveyor lie never came within hundreds of votes of being elected. on is powerful nourish- When I read of a love match between a widower of 00 and a widow of 30 I always laugh. I wonder If when a politician olllce seeker works himself up Into a fren.y of patriotic (V) eloquence, he really imagines anyone Is much alTcctcd by it. I read In tli? papers about the Immense audiences that turn out to hear Long, Brlstow, StubbR and Le land. As a matter of fact their audiences have as a rule been ridiculously small. The Atchison Globe says Congress man Scott, of the second district, was billed to talk to the farmers at the Hiawatha Chautauqua last week and was extensively advertised.

He up ike to about Beventy people, all but fifteen of whom were women and children and of the fifteen men only three were farmers. Scott Is a good speak er, but mighty few real farmers are liable to leave their fields In a busy time to hear a newspaper man who has been transformed Into a statesman, lecture them on bow to farm. From my oolnt of view the people seem to take mighty little Interest iu the personal squabble between men who are running for Important offices. What thev have done In public airalrs and what they stand for now is of more Importance. What a man has done is the best In dication of what he will do.

In other words a man's public record speaks louder and more convincingly than any promises or professions he may make. A man who never goes to church and has nothing but slurs to utter against religion says he always feels like "old scratch" on Monday. We do not remember ever hearing a remark of that kind from a regular church attendant. If going to church had no other effect than to keep a man from "feeling like old scratch on Monday" the experiment would be worth try ing. I do not know certainly Just how "Old Scratch" feels, but I im aglne It Is pretty rocky.

Electrician Meets Sudden Death. While engaged In repairing tome electrlo light wiring on a pole In front of Baney's meat market last Tburs day noun, Milton P. GUI came In con- tact with a live wire which sent current of 2400 volts through bis body. It is thought be was killed Instantly. Doctors worked over his body for two hours, endeavoring to resuscitate blm but their efforts were unavailing.

The voltage was strong enough to foe Instantly fatal and the wire struck him in two places, on the leg and on the shoulder. Mr. CIU bad been in the employ of the electric light plant since Jannary and had done most of the wiring about town. Thursday Mr. Hunter, the superintendent, sent lilm to do some repairing on the line on the east side of the square, and lie bad just ascend ed the pole and fixed his safety belt when the accident happened.

The current was broken and when Mr. Hunter looked out to see where the trouble was he noticed the body of GUI banging lifeless to the pole. II shut off the current and rushed tn the young mail's assistance. By means of a ladder he succeeded In lowering the body. Drs Shaw, Reed and Noble commenced working to revive him and gave up only after it was evident that there was no life left In the body.

It Is their opinion that death resulted while he was on the pole. Ills father was called up at Topeka by telephone and came up on the eveumg train to take the body home. Milton P. Olll was the son of S. II.

Tax Levying Officers Take Notice. On account of the workings of the new tax law, the State Tax Commis sion will not be able to pass on the assessed valuations of Jackson county and make return of same before the usual time for making levies. This will make it Impossible for me to make up a statement of the revised assessed valuations for the several taxing districts In time for said meetings. 1 advise all such officers whose date of levy comes prior to July 31 to meet and adjourn said meeting until July 31, Iti'1, at which time I hope to be aole to furnish statement of re vised assessed valuation for each taxing district.

It is suKKCHled that liryan made a blunder In declaring that he would not run for a second term If elected to the first that he would not make anything by It. Hut Bryan is pretty smooth and he doubtless figured that a million Democrats who want one more chance before they die to 70te for some other candidate for president, will vote for Dim this time If they are sure of netting rid of him In four years, rather than face the alternative of having him up again In 1M2, and Will, and l20j and 1921.

Oskaloosa Independent. A great hue and cry Is being raised about the quality of the food Thaw, the crazy murderer, has to eat at the asylum where he Is confined. The claim is that while the food Is all right for his body and that he Is setting fat on It, It does not generate brainpower. We remember that the first year of the war when they fed us on wormy hard tack, sprouted beans and spoiled meat and soma times mighty scant rations of that, nobody outside the boys In blue made any great fuss about It. Mow honestly, aren't you all getting mighty tired of all this rot published about Thaw.
