1-26 Russia's Great Cavalry Force The Russian communiques of the last seven months have made frequent mention of the good work done by their cavalry. When the counter offensive opened last October, it was the mounted arm which played such an important part in turning the Nazi position at Rostov, and later they earned distinction in the fighting on the Moscow front When winter closed down and the plains of Russia were covered with snow, the employment of horsemen in co-operation with ski troops was mentioned in almost every advance made by the Red With the coming of spring, cavalry activities increased, and they have been in the lead of the offensive being directed by Marshal Timoshenko, Russia's most distinguished cavalryman. Russia is the only country which has a great force of cavalry. All the Western European powers reduced the numbers of their mounted troops during the First World War and post-war developments led to further reductions. In 1939 the cavalry strength of Germany was two and one-half divisions, of France and Italy three divisions each and of England four regular regiments and yeomanry division.

Russia at that time had thiry- two horsed divisions and two independent Brigades, and Poland fifteen Brigades. The present strength of the Russian cavalry is said to be even board meeting will be held this evening at 8 o'clock. Mrs. Nina Parks of Detroit underwent a major operation Saturday in Thorn Memorial hospital. Mrs.

N. D. Stiverson and son Jack Nolan returned home yes- day from the hospital greater. Germany also may have increased the numbers of her mounted men, but it is not possible for Germany even to approach the Red Army's strength in this arm which by now may well be from thirty-five to forty divisions. The retention of this arm in Russia has not been for any reason of sentiment or tradition; the Russian staff are too realistic to be influenced by such reason.

They have modernized their mobile forces in the way best suited for fighting in the vast areas with poor communications in which they have had to operate. In the Russian spring thaw no force can move anywhere off the roads except cavalry, and roads are few. In the snow they have shown how they can work with fast moving ski troops. In summer horses can to a great extent live off the land and they are not dependent on supplies from the rear as is a tank, which cannot move without gas. have no knowledge of the present organization of the Russian Cavalry Division.

The Soviet Cavalry Training Manual of 1933 laid down the strength of a division as twenty squadrons, armored cars, signals and total of 3,701 men, 3,533 horses and forty-two fighting machines. Machine guns are carried on light carts drawn by four horses and every eight men in a squadron are equipped with a light machine gun or a grenade thrower. This was the organization of nine years ago and it wiU have been kept up to date in weapons and equipment, particularly in tank fighting equipment Cavalry on foot can carry out all the functions of infantry, and their mobility when mounted usually enables them 'to choose the direction from which to make their MERCHANDISE 1. They are able to cover great distances with the minimum of fatigue. The rider is at advantage in this respect compared with the marching foot-soldier. He travels almost as fast and much more comfortably over broken ground than the truck-borne infantryman. The disadvantage of mounted men in dismounted action is that one man in every four must normally stay with the horses, and the horses are target for hostile aircraft This handicap however will not be so great in the wooded parts of where cover from the air can be obtained for both men and horses. Nearly 50 per cent of the colts foaled at this station from mares that were bred on the. ninth day after foaling were born with crooked legs, crooked backs, crooked necks or other deformities.

When breeding was deferred until the second heat these deformities disappeared almost entirely. The first university in the western hemisphere was founded in Santo Domingo in 1538. 52. Wanted to Buy pi RUBS and worms fey the thousands. per hundred.
