(QicNaus Tuesday, October 7, 1986 2C Bartkowski will face Falcons from other side of field By Mike Hunt New staff writer SUWANEE, Ga. The word out of Los Angeles is that Steve Bartkowski, the quarterback whose immobility caused him to become obsolete in Atlanta's offensive scheme, will start against the Falcons Sunday. Because it was Dan Henning who released Bartkowski last season after 10 years of service with Atlanta, the potential for another war of words a la Philadelphia exists. Bart himself stoked the flames during preseason, when he said it is nice to finally play for a team that puts a premium on pass protection. On Monday, it was Henning's turn.

Asked night. L.A. leads the series 282. receiver Anthony Allen had fluid removed from his knee Monday and is questionable for the game. Depending on his progress, Henning said he might activate Stacey Bailey from the injured reserve list.

Other notable injuries include a continuing back ailment to nose tackle Tony Casillas, who may miss Wednesday's practice. its weak performance against the Eagles, Atlanta still leads the NFL in total offense. The Falcons are No. 2 in rushing offense, 17 yards behind Chicago. on the logic of NFL scheduling, which has Atlanta playing its next eight games against playoff teams: "It came down from the mountain with Moses." if Bartkowski's arm still poses a deep threat, Henning said, "I hate to sound like Buddy Ryan, but up to this point, that hasn't been the case.

But if Bart is in the pocket and has protection, he can throw the ball as deep as anybody in the NFL" Asked if the Rams have adequately protected their quarterback who cannot dodge harm's way, Henning smiled and said, "Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't." Bartkowski's endangered knees were severely tested last week when Eagles safety Andre Waters the same player who was ejected Sunday for a late hit against Falcons quarterback David Archer put Bartkowski out of the game with a low shot. As a result, Steve Dils played for Los An geles in Sunday's 26-20 overtime win against Tampa Bay. The Rams list Bartkowski as probable, but Henning said it makes no difference which quarterback the Falcons face. "I don't think either one is the scrambling type," said Henning, who added the Falcons had two separate plans for Philadelphia's Ron Jaworski (a drop-back passer with limited mobility) and Randall Cunningham (a scrambler). Henning said that even if Gerald Riggs had been able to play, the complexion of Sunday's game would likely have rendered his services useless.

"If we had gotten in the same situation we did, he probably wouldn't have been in there anyway," said Henning. "We didn't do a good job when faced with the situation where we had to throw the ball all the time." Riggs left in the first quarter after suffering a concussion. After undergoing further examinations Monday, it was determined the concussion is not serious and Riggs is expected to start against the Rams. The game will be Atlanta's first against the NFC West, where the Falcons, Rams and 49ers are tied at 3-1. "We are not good enough to make the mistakes we made last week and still win," said Henning.

"It's a divisional game, and that seems to always increase the level of intensity." McMahon suffered a first-degree, or mild, shoulder separation in the fourth quarter of the season opener against Cleveland. JETS: Quarterback Richard Todd, traded two, years ago by the Jets and cut earlier this year by the New Orleans Saints, has agreed to terms with the New York Jets, the NFL club announced Monday. Jets starting quarterback Ken O'-; Brien suffered torn knee ligaments in Sunday's 14-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills and is doubtful for Sun-, day's game against in New England.

"I don't expect to come up and play," Todd said. "Kenny is the quar-terback and if he's hurt, (backup) Pat (Ryan) plays. I've come up as an insurance policy. I came into this league as a Jets quarterback, and I want to go out as a Jets quarter- back." PATRIOTS: New England quar-. terback Tony Eason's playing status will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis after X-rays Monday showed no rib fracture.

Eason was injured in the final minute of the first half of the Patriots' 34-7 NFL victory over the Miami Dolphins Sunday. An initial examination showed bruised ribs on the right side and a possible hairline fracture. But no fracture was evident in X-rays taken Monday at Massachu-' setts General Hospital, club publicity director Jim Greenidge said. Linebacker Steve Nelson suffered a sprained left ankle in the first quarter and didn't return to action. Greenidge said Monday Nelson's playing status also would be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

REPLAY: The NFL is developing a glossary of terms for its television replay officials to avoid the recur-, rence of confusion in the Kansas City Chiefs-Los Angeles Raiders game. Umpire John Keck misunderstood replay official Jadk Reader's ruling of Sunday of "pass incomplete" for "pass is complete" and let stand Raiders' Marc Wilson's touchdown pass to Dokie Williams. "It is unbelievable to think that football team has won only one game," said Dooley, the embattled coach and athletic director who is suing the university to retain both positions against the wishes of Tech's administration. Negotiations began Monday in Dooley's $3.5 million lawsuit against Tech.

"They have a team whose record is very deceiving after viewing films of the Georgia and Nebraska games. They could have won those games and everybody knows what kind of programs Georgia and Nebraska have. "There is a minute difference between winning and losing and they didn't have it against Georgia or Nebraska. We couldn't find it against Cincinnati. It's just hard to imagine their record is like it is.

"I haven't talked to Vince about South Carolina. I plan to give him a call, but I'm afraid he might give me the same kind of advice I gave him for the Clemson game (against Georgia) and if that's true I'll be in for a long day. I might not listen to what he has to say because he said he felt they were very fortunate to win the game against South Carolina." While the Gamecocks have made losing the close games a trend, the Hokies have built a 4-1 record by win ning two games by less than a touchdown. Tech took advantage of four West Virginia turnovers to edge the Mountaineers 13-7 last week and upset Clemson 20-14 in Death Valley to set the tone for their season. Despite working behind an inexperienced offensive line that lost all five starters from 1985, running backs Maurice Williams and Eddie Hunter have formed a solid one-two punch for Tech, rushing for 4,415 yards and 37 touchdowns since arriving at Blacksburg.

Williams, the team MVP last year, is averaging 94 yards a game on the ground and Hunter adds another 70. Yet Dooley's team has scored just four touchdowns rushing while junior quarterback Erik Chapman has thrown for an equal amount of scores while racking up 868 yards passing completing 60 of 106 passes. Tech's most valuable offensive tool has turned out to be sophomore Chris Kinzer, a conventional style kicker who missed field goals of 9 and 17 yards to start the season, but has converted 13 straight since. "Our two running backs have been good football players all along," said Dooley, who is midway through his eighth season at Tech. "They have done a real good job, so the big problem has been the offensive line.

They have done a fair job, but they haven't been as consistent as we would like them to be. "Our quarterback was new from the standpoint that Mark Cox and Todd Greenwood started for us for the last four years. We felt all along Erik was a good quarterback and we thought he would compete for the starting job last year, but he broke a small bone in his right hand." 7.2 93.1 4.2 7.5 Auburn Iowa Oklahoma Alabama North Caro.
