Obituaries Minneapolis Star and Tribune Monday, June 23, 1S83 Boy, 2 stable af ter bone marrow graft from identical twin Louis Derby, 61, coordinator at city Vo-tech Institute, dies I MAVTI, which then operated out of Vocational High School. "He was a very active person," Schwlchtenberg said. "He was tall, lean, in shape. He bicycled, ran, dug ditches In his farm in southern Minnesota. He didn't drink, didn't smoke.

Nobody is going to believe Lou Derby died after open heart surgery." Besides his wife, Derby is survived by sons Jeff of Cambridge, and Joel of Richfield; daughter Debbie of Richfield and mother Gertrude of Faribault. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Werness Brothers Blooming-ton Chapel, W. Old Shakopee RL and Penn Av. Services will be held at 1 p.m.

Tuesday at the Bloomington Church of Christ, 9000 Blooming-ton Freeway. Memorials to the donor's choice are suggested. whether It has taken," she said. In an hourlong procedure, a half-pint of Cameron's bone marrow was with-' drawn from an area in his lower-' back. Not long after, Cameron happf-A ly visited with Brett while the marrow was still being fed Into-Brett's veins through a tube.

Doctors said that once it is in his system the marrow will make its way Into his1 bone tissue. Without the transplant, Brett could have been treated with chemothera- py alone and had a 30 percent chance of permanent remission. With the transplant, his chances of; permanent remission are 80 percent, Krivit said. Doctors hope the transplanted bone marrow from Cameron will regener-' ate Brett's bone marrow, which in turn would reproduce normal white blood cells. Because the boys are identical twins, doctors expect Brett's body to accept Cameron's' marrow more readily.

Associated Press Two-year-old identical twins Brett and Cameron Hudson of North Carolina were in stable condition at University of Minnesota Hospitals Sunday, two days after bone marrow from Cameron was transplanted into his leukemia-stricken brother. They are among the youngest identical twins to undergo such a procedure for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia, a leukemia that is more commonly found in men, said Dr. William Krivit, a university pediatrics professor who performed the transplant Friday morning. "We're just tickled pink," said their mother, Maria Hudson. "I'm just so happy they're doing good because I was frightened about what transplant day would be like." Hospital spokeswoman Mary Stanik said It was too early to tell if the graft will be successful.

"It usually takes about 30 days to determine "Basically, his main interest was and I (trades and industrial arts)," said Donovan Schwlchtenberg, MAVTI campus director. "He was committed to adult education tor people coming back to Improve their skills. As far as I know, he never tried to do anything else. He was very Involved In the school." Derby, a native of Faribault, served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He participated in the Easter Sunday surprise raid on Okinawa, his wife said.

Later, he attended Mankato State and received his degree in industrial arts in 1951. The next four years he taught industrial arts at Washington High School In Sioux Falls, S.D., while earning a master's degree in the same subject at the University of South Dakota. He taught one year at a junior high school in Richfield before being hired In 1957 as a coordinator by Louis R. Derby, 61, of Richfield, the night school coordinator for trades and industrial arts classes at Minneapolis Area Vocational Technical Institute (MAVTI) for the past 29 years, died Saturday after heart surgery at Fairview-Southdale Hospital. "He set up the courses, hired the teachers, put in placement ads and registered students," said his wife, Thelma.

He often said he wasn't going to retire because he liked his work so much." Ward Wheeler, Derby's former day-school counterpart, said: "Louis was congenial, a story-teller and a friend to everyone. You immediately saw (student) Improvement in our work. It wasn't a deferred value and that was richly rewarding for him." About 10 years ago, MAVTI had about 1,800 students each school year. Wheeler said, about a third of them in Derby's classes. sr Wl.
