Michelangelo becomes Inspired and willingly returns to paint, not just the sides, but the entire ceiling, but this time acording to his own specifications. When the Pope is wounded on one of his many campaigns he returns to Rome ready to die.

But Michelangelo persuades him to stay alive to see the completion of the chapel, just as the Pope had talked him into returning to his work after suffering a near fatal fall from the scaffolding. Harrison Is at his best as the now faltering and weakened old man, who through sheer determination has managed to stay alive to share in the completion of the paintings. The pomp of Catholic pageantry was much In evidence, presented colorfully and with dignity. An excellent supporting cast created a comfortable backdrop for the two actors without cluttering up the story. J.H.

The film is now showing at the Vic Theater. The film stars Rex Harrison as the Pope and Charlton Hes- ton as Michelangelo and that's about all there Is to know.

Actually It's a two-man film, with Harrison walking off with the acting honors. He is superb as the money pinching warrior Pope, an exact opposite of the Popes known to this generation. He Is cruel, vin dictive and crafty, yet manages to convey his worry about his image and the fact that he is much In awe of the tremendous talent of Michelangelo. The film spans the four years it took Michelanglo to finish his famous paintings on the ceiling of the Sis tine Chapel. The feature presentation, scheduled for 8 p.m., will be preceded by a W. C. Fields film at 7:30. In "Viridiana," according to a Time Magazine review, "Bunuel attempts to open people's eyes to the evils of sentimental piety and morbid tyranny in Franco's Spain." Produced In Spanish with English subtitles, the film has been described also as "undoubtedly one of the boldest, crudest and most cynical stories to be depicted on the screen, but a major cinematic achievement." Tickets are available at the door for "Viridiana." Other showings of the film are scheduled Monday evening at St. Nor- bert College and at 4:15 and 8:20 p.m.
