"We also have to put on a good pass rush to keep (Carter) Davis (Wofford quarterback) from having time to pass." Freshman Jerry Coffer will be Shi's replacement, should he be unable to play, leaving the Paladin defense relatively 6trong despite the substitution.

In last week's 10-7 loss to Presbyterian, the only Blue Hose points came on a 23-yard touchdown drive set up by a Paladin fumble and a 26-yard field goal that was set up by an interception. State at North Carolina, Stanford at By GERALD GARRETT News Sports Writer Furman, South Carolina, Presbyterian and The Citadel will be at home, while Clemson, Wofford, Newberry and S.C. State take to the road Saturday as the college football season enters its third week. The Paladins, who suffered a narrow 10-7 defeat at the hands of the Blue Hose of Presbyterian last week, will entertain the Terriers of Wofford, 13-12 victims of Lenoir Rhyne last week, at 7:30 p.m. in Sirrine Stadium. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks, 0-2 on the season after losses to Virginia and Georgia Tech, will host Mississippi in a 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers held an explosive Citadel offense scoreless and took a 13-0 decision in then-opener, while the Owls edged Houston, 14-13, in a first-week upset. The Owls will bring a strong defense into the game, with Monferdini will hurt, but probably the most damaging blow will be the loss of Shi. Mike Bartik, offensive end and punter who was also in jured in the PC game, will play.

Bosox BOSTON (AP) Bob Bolin pitched out of a no-hit, bases-loaded jam in the eighth with the help of a sparkling defensive play by third baseman Rico Petrocelli as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Friday night and held onto first place in the American League East. The Red Sox, who led Detroit by a mere percentage point before the start of the game, took a one-game lead over the Tigers in the torrid baseball race. Bolin came on in relief of Bob Veale, who himself pitch'! out of a bases-full situation in the sixth inning. After Veale allowed the first two batters in the eighth to reach base, Bolin put the Red Sox further in a hole by allowing an infield 6ingle that loaded the bases. Ed Brinkman then hit a tackier, but Tommy Hance (42) closes in on the stop.

An unidentified Ram is the initial Reds Down Astros, 4-3; Clinch NL Western Crown linebacker Rodrigo Barries and an experienced defensive secondary leading the way. Their offensive attack is led by the passing of senior quarterback Bruce Gadd and the running of freshman John Coleman (84 yards on 24 carries against Houston) and sophomore Gary Ferguson. Split end Edwin Collins, one of Gadd's favorite receivers, could also provide some headaches for the Tigers experienced secondary.

Clemson, meanwhile, will be paced by quarterback Ken Pengitoxe and running backs Smiley Sanders, Heide Davis and Joy Williamson. The two teams have met five times previously, with Clemson holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The Tigers won the last meeting the two teams, 19-0, in 1959. CLEMSON 13 Citadel RICE Houston 0 14 The Gamecocks of South Carolina will be attempting to get their offensive attack moving and committing fewer errors when they tangle with (Mississippi in 'Williams-Brice Stadium. The two teams have met only once previously when Mississippi and quarterback Charlie Conerly downed the 'Cocks 33-0 in 1947.

The Rebels are paced this season by junior quarterback Norris Weese, who tossed three touchdown passes and ran for two in their 34-29 win over Memphis Stat two weeks ago. Overall, 10 of 11 offensive starters return from the squad which downed Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl last year. Greg Ainsworth at tailback, Gene Allen at fullback and Bill Barry at wingback will pace the jpowerful offensive game. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, will be relying on quarterback Bill Troup, who has recovered from what was considered a minor injury in last week's game against Georgia Tech. Troup has completed 28 of 53 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns, with 24 of those completions coming in the Gamecocks' opening loss to Virginia.

Also pacing the offense will be tailback Jay Lynn Hodgin, who leads the rushing attack with 75 yards and a 4.2 average, and fullback Bill Cregar, who has 43 yards. Split end Jackie Brown will be one of Troup's primary targets, having snagged 15 passes for 231 yards, while flanker Mike Haggard has caught 10 aerials for 143 yards. S. CAROLINA MISSISSIPPI 14 Virginia 24 34 Memphis St. 29 6 Ga.

Tech 34 Newberry's battle with Catawba will be the first conference game for the Indians and both teams will be taking perfect records into the contest. The Indians downed Emory and Henry, 27-9, in their opener and dumped Gardner Webb, 14-8, last week. Catawba, meanwhile, fought back from a 24-0 halftime deficit to claim a 27-24 win over Mars Hill in their opener. Leading the Catawba offense will be junior quarterback Don Davis, who started last season as a sophomore and is an excellent passer. The rushing game is led by senior tailback Bill Godsey and fullback Steve Jtoeder, while tight end Harry Balestrieri will be an adequate target for Davis' aerials.

Newberry, meanwhile, will be led by running back Don Garrick, quarterback Tommy Williamson and fulback Steve Williams. Defensively, end Greg Har-tle will bolster the unit. In the last battle between the Indians and Catawba, Newberry came out with a 13-0 decision. NEWBERRY 27 Emrv-Hnry 14 Gardner Webb CATAWBA Mars Hill 24 Presbyterian came out with a 17-6 decision over Mars Hill when the two teams met last season, but many people are predicting a much tougher battle this time around. The Blue Hose take their 1-0 record against the Lions 1-1 overall mark, which includes a 40-0 decision over iMillsaps in the season's opener and a narrow 27-24 loss to Catawba last week.

Presbyterian will sport a strong defensive unit, led by South Carolina defensive players of the week Ken Lister and Stan Gruber. Offensively, however, the the Blue Hose could have problems. Quarterback Wayne Renwick, who suffered a leg injury in last week's win over Furman, will not be able to play, leaving the burden to junior Wally Bowen, a 5-11, 180-pounder from Jacksonville, Fa. David Eckstein, Johnny Jes-elnik and Bob Wills top the PC ground game. PRESBYTERIAN 10 Furman 7 MARS HILL 40 MillsaDs 9 24 Catawba a "must" game, but the Paladins will be greatly handicapped by the losses of defensive end David Shi and tight end John Monferdini, both out with injuries and doubtful starters.

Obviously, the loss of 3-2 lord Perry fired a seven-hitter for his 22nd victory of the American League baseball sea son Friday night as Cleveland trimmed New York 4-1 and dealt the Yankees' dwindling title hopes another serious blow. It was the sixth loss in the last seven games for the stumbling Yankees and dropped them AM games out of first nlace. New York has only 10 games remaining to play. Perry pitched his way out of several jams and was backed by some sharp fielding. Ceveland lumped ahead in the third when Buddy Bell lined double to left and hustled home on a single by Jack Brohamer that Horace Clarke stoDDed on the cra6s in short right.

Earlier, Veale had come on in relief of Lynn McGlothen, 8- 6, who had given up the Tigors only runs in the sixth on a two- run homer by Sims.

Veale got out of bases-loaded trouble by striking out Frank Howard and nailing Tony Taylor on a live drive to Petrocelli. Carl Yastrzemski knocked in two runs for the Red Sox with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a home run in the third, which proved to be the winning run.
