F9S 9 IF ds jf-f loo for VUK rem ay by Day: Fail's Mot Only Time By IRIS SYNDERGAARD In most of our country early fall weather and fairs arrive together They come in all sizes in Utah ranging from county fairs Bradshaw his ruddy face split by an ecstatic grin collected the betting money Mayor Beeman recovered in plenty of time to renew the challenge the following year At that time Pomeroy's horse left the confines of the race track for some unexplained reason and took off on a trip around the world leaving a trail of dust! For all I know worn and grizzled the two men are racing again this vear If they are I'd like to watch! AT CURFEW All year long our town was so windy the inhabitants had to live somewhere else horses pounded heavily around the first turn Bradshaw's horse trailed by a length All of a sudden Mayor Bee-man's horse came to a total stop But Beeman didn't He flew straight up in the air Apparently once there the only way he could think of to get down was to drop like a stone Which he did His return to earth was marked by a solid thudding sound like a heavy sack being dropped COLLECTS BETS A number of the mayor's constituents hauled his limp body off the track while Pomeroy Each year the two mounted their immense stolid work horses and plodded off around the track Since neither man was exactly handicapped by a notion of fair play the outcome was hardly predictable COCKLEBUR AFFAIR Always a memorable event the race talked about longest was the one referred to as "the cocklebur affair" It was generally agreed Pom Bradshaw stuffed a number of those prickly objects under the saddle blanket of the horse belonging to our mayor the Honorable Pete Beeman Whatever the cause the race was dramatic When the two gave Aunt Martha the first prize Maudie Perkins didn't speak to her for a and vice versa HORSE RACING The entires in our fair drew everyone from miles around and no one went home until after the rodeo events which included bulldogging calf roping and another annual the horse race between two local men on their work plugs The affair was half in fun and half serious The onlookers thought it was fun while the two contestants our mayor Pete Beeman and the local butcher Pomeroy Bradshaw were in dead earnest les to be the best in the county and since each had a disposition as tart as her product- the feud was peppered with acrimonious comments Each woman selected her fanciest jar of pickles hauled it to the fair and tried always unsuccessfully to bribe the judge with flattery The judge Timothy Pickett was a bachelor who rarely ate homecooking He was therefore mighty smart about what was good to eat but awfully dumb about women He didn't know he was being bribed! Furthermore in all the years he judged the pickle contests he never noticed that when he as those at the Utah State Fair there exists feuds between entrants If so most of us don't know it But in my town the feuds were part of the Fair in fact they gave the annual event much of its spark and ginger We thought fairs were sup-POSED to have personal contests PICKLE FEUD Like the one between Maudie Perkins and my Aunt Martha who held a yearly pickle feud Both ladies were cooks or renown and neither had any modest ideas about hiding her light under a bushel Each considered her dill pick "'I in
