It was the dying request of St. Swithin to have his body buried under the eaves of his Cathedral where the raindrops would foil on his grave, and the faithful could kneel to offer a prayer. Henry VIII of England desecrated this shrine in 1530.

It was my good fortune on Sunday, September 19, 1909 to attend several Masses and receive Holy Communion in the Cathedral of Bamberg where St. Henry and his consort, St. Cunegold, are buried.

Here, too, I saw several relics of my patron saint: His prayer book, irovy crucifix, sword, knife, mantle, etc. Also a chasuble embroidered by his ly wife. A Catholic dictionary could have informed him that every cleric from seminarian to cardinal wears a biretta, but that the Pope wears a berrettino or zucchetto known as Solideo because he takes it off only to honor God Almighty.

Fifteen times I had the privilege of being in the private apartments of Pope Pius or at one of his papal functions. On August 6, 1909, semi-private audfence this saintly pontiff made me a present of the white skull cap he was wearing. Pope Paul (1005-1621) permitted missioners in China to keep evitable. TONSURED On entering the clerical state the er, whose head was threatened' by his pupil, Henry VIII, originated the Cambridge collegiate costume. A doctor of divinity is permitted a four-cornered biretta and a ring.

The ordinary priest's hat, or biretta, is three-cornered, symbolic of the Trinity. The peaks were added for convenience to the primativc skull cap. Secular clergy raised to the cardinalate were granted the red biretta by Pope Paul II in 1464, but only in 1591 was this extended to priests thus selected from religious orders. A Roman custom at the burial of youths permitted the deceased youngsters to be clothed with a small biretta and a black habit of St. Philip Neri, called "the third son-Sermon which will be read in Apostle of Rome," after Peter and all Churches of Christ, Scientist, Paul.

We must forget any notions that the traffic problem has solved or will solve itself." Garrison cautioned that "this needless loss of human life will not stop until pedestrians and motorists alike accept their patriotic responsibility to be careful for the sake of the war effort." PAMPELL'S ELECT FORMER GOVERNOR DAN MOODY TO THE U. S. SENATE HE'S KERR COUNTY'S FRIEND AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CITIZENS OF KERR COUNTY Dear Citizen: Seldom comes a time in history when a community is provided with an opportunity to pay its debt of gratitude to a person for services rendered long ago, and at the same time to aid itself and contribute to the patriotic and courageous administration of the war and the peace to come. Such is the reward to the citizens of Kerr County who cast their ballot for Gov. Dan Moody for United States Senator.

Briefly, here are the facts regarding Governor Moody's voluntary action which settled the location of the Old Spanish Trail through Center Point, Kerrville and In the summer of 1929, the engineers of the State Highway Department had definitely set the OST route from Comfort through the hills some mile or two north of the towns of Center Point, Kerrville and Ingram. This route was unserviceable and very unsatisfactory to the citizens of Kerr County. By fall the people were indignant to the extent that the Commissioners' Court had the county engineer lay out a route suitable to the citizens and which is now covered by this important highway. Realizing that the Highway Department would be reluctant to even discuss a route not selected by its own engineers, who was your county judge at this time, with other interested parties from Kerr County, went to Austin and laid our own highway map together with our plea before Dan Moody, who was then Governor of Texas. Quick to see the injustice to Kerr County citizens, Governor Moody suggested another meeting with the Highway Commission.

Dan Moody arranged for the special hearing and accompanied the Kerr County delegation, where he made the appeal in person for relocation of the highway. It was agreed that the Commission would accompany Governor Moody to Kerr County and personally inspect the route recommended by the Kerr County Commissioners' Court. On December 9, 1929, the full membership of the Highway Commission accompanied Governor Moody to Kerrville. The Highway Commissioners, the County Commissioners and Dan Moody thoroughly inspected both proposed routes, and in a meeting held thereafter at the courthouse unanimously voted to change the original plans and reroute the highway to its present location. So it was, in 1929.

that Governor Dun Moody came to the aid of Kerr County and the Hill Country in its time of need, and I sincerely hope that this state'- ment will provide impetus to the expression of thanks which the citizens of Kerr County will give to Dan Moody July 25 at the election polls.
