Smith was the first overall pick in the National Hockey League's 1978 entry draft. In six seasons since then, he had held or shared Minnesota's scoring lead each year except 1979-80, when a broken ankle forced him to miss 19 games. His two second-period tallies gave him 13 this season, tying him with Vancouver's Tony Tanti for the league lead. Vaive has scored eight goals in his last four games. The Rangers, who have lost two games in a row after a 9-1 start, led 3-2 when their penalty-killing unit faltered. At 14:38, Vaive put home a wrist shot, then he knocked in another short wrist shot at 19:06 for the game-winner.
