B-4 Monday, Dec. 17, 1973 Green Bay Press-Gazette Colts Primed For 74 Season Taylor Tells If Like 49ers' Krueger Hints Retirement SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Charlie Krueger, veteran defensive tackle for the San Fransisco 49ers, is hinting the just-completed football season may have been his last. "It's no big deal," Krueger said. Taylor, portraying the image of an indes-tructable object, won his match against Goulet by standing, for the most part, in the center of the ring unflinchingly taking blows, while his doomed opponent bounced off of him every time he tried to inflict some harm and finally succumbed to a pin in four minutes and 58 seconds. In the main event before the 3,560 fans, Ken Patera outlifted Superstar Billy Graham in a weightlifting contest. Patera pressed 465 pounds as Graham was carried from the ring by Taylor in a rage.

In the semifinal, Nick Bockwinkel beat Red Bastien on a disqualification. In a midget tag team match, Cowboy Lang and Little Louie won two of three falls from Lord Littlebrook and Billy The Kid in 24:25. Greg Gagne and Rick Flair fought to a 20-minute draw and Bob Remus scored two pins over John Paul in a 10-minute rookie workout match. By CUFF CHRISTL Press Goiette Sports Writer Without a trace of deception, Chris Taylor will look you straight in the eye and sincerely, if not convincingly, insist he's in an honest profession. And his wife of three months, Lynne, with equal sincerity will vouch for his contention.

After making his mark as an NCAA wrestler at Iowa State and earning a medal in the 1972 Olympics, the 6-foot-5, 430-pound Taylor has turned to professional wrestling, a "sport" almost universally regarded as a hoax. Yet the mountainous Taylor claims pro wrestling, "Physically is much more demanding," than the collegiate style. And when asked the questio every pro wrestler is confronted with: Is it Taylor replies, "No, it isn't, surprisingly." Standing alongside the dressing room at the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena, where he wrestled and defeated Rene Goulet as part of Sunday night's card, Taylor continued, "When I went out there tonight, I had no idea what was going to happen. "It kind of hurts your pride to be in a sport and asked if its rigged. I went through two months of hell training for this with (Vern) Gagne and Billy Robinson.

I cut and bled And it sounded so sincere, although maybe a wee bit rehearsed. However his handsome and pleasant wife, who is dwarfed by his presence and comes across as a picture of honesty, provides her support, if he's not totally convincing by answering, "It's not," to the same question. And then trying to offer evidenc she adds, "He's come home with so many sore muscles and muscle cramps, to be his wife you almost have to be a trainer." Taylor signed his contract in November for a figure "in excess of $400,000," he says, and Sunday's match was his sixth as a pro and fifth this week. i And he insists, "I really love it. It's a little rougher, it's tougher on my conditioning, but it's a lot of fun.

"It's not the money I'm in it for. I've wrestled all my life and it would have been ridiculous to go into something else when I'm good at wrestling." "I'm wet and I'm cold," the owner of the Colts said as he brushed snowflakes from his red hair, "but I'm also mighty happy." Irsay, who has had little to cheer about since buying the club in July, 1972, stood on the frozen sideline Sunday as Baltimore beat the New England Patriots 18-13. The triumph gave the rebuilding Colts a 4-10 record for the National Football League season. It also marked only the second time in two years that the team had been able to put victories back to back. "This makes our win over Miami last week (a 16-3 upset) a lot more meaningful," Coach Howard Schnellenber-ger said. "It's also a great starting point for next season." "I told you we'd be back," Irsay chimed in.

Marty Domres and Lydell Mitchell, two players who watched much of the early season action from the bench, led the Colts Sunday. Domres, who replaced rookie Bert Jones at quarterback after the fifth game, hit on 11 of 20 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Mitchell, who carried the ball only four times in the first two games of the season, gained 142 yards on 34 carries. The yardage gave Mitchell 963 yards for the year, breaking the old team record set by Alan Ameche in 1955. "I thought about the record all week long," Mitchell admitted.

"I wanted it real bad. I wanted the mark, too, but I guess that will have to wait until next year." Baltimore scored the first time it had the ball Sunday when Domres passed 17 yards to Cotton Speyrer in the end zone. The drive was helped along when New England was penalized for lining up offsides on a successful Colt field goal. George Hunt's first of two field goals gave the Colts a 9-0 lead before Jim Plunkett put New England on the scoreboard with a 23-yard TD pass to Randy Vataha in the second period. Another Plunkett scoring aerial, this one for 15 yards to Mack Herron, gave the Patriots a 13-9 lead in the third period.

And when Sandy Durko picked off a Domres pass to start the final quarter, it, looked like the Pats might be ready to pull away. Four plays later, however, the Colts got the ball back deep in New England territory. Linebacker Stan White intercepted Plunkett at the 33, then lateraled to Ted Hendricks who in turn lateraled to Rick Volk. Volk was tackled on the 20. Inside insulating sliding windows.

The Vikings, despite two lost fumbles, made consistent gains throughout the game and took advantage of two Giants interceptions, one by safety Terry Brown for a 63-yard touchdown and another setting up a touchdown by Oscar Reed. The defense held the Giants to 112 yards rushing, 90 of them by Ron Johnson and stopped three fourth-down plays.

The Giants didn't score until early in the last period on a 16-yard pass from Randy Johnson to Ron Johnson. NFC playoffs. For Webster, the crushing defeat signaled the end of a dismal 2-11-1 season for the Giants and his five-year career as their head mentor. "Coaching the Giants was a one e-in-a-lifetime opportunity," the resigning coach told reporters after the game. "I had the opportunity to do it and I just fell down." Webster praised the team's closing performance "no one laid down" and remained mum about his future.

Stram, disappointed over the Chiefs' 7-5-2 season, said he feels "very strongly that we don't have any problem we can't overcome. We are going to start right away to work for a championship in 1974." Coach Ron Waller of the Chargers, who carved a 2-11-1 record, termed the game "one of the worst we've played. How many times did we fumble?" This game provided a great opportunity to do this." Stram said he wasn't afraid of the second guessing that might result. There are a lot of big reasons for buying a Duster instead of a Pinto. Duster has room for five. Pinto has room for four. Duster's trunk is almost three times bigger.

Duster's engine offers half again as much horsepower. And Duster has a wider stance. Of course, Duster's price is more. But not that much more. So there's little reason to buy a Pinto when you know the big advantages of Duster.
