Stevens Co. said Monday that a complaint of unfair labor practices at one of its plants in South Carolina has been withdrawn by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers. The textile company said the complaint, filed in February, alleged that the working conditions of two employees at the Watts plant in Laurens were changed unlawfully because the workers supported union organizing efforts. The complaint alleged the men were worked harder, watched closely on the job, not given emergency messages and not given time off for illness, Stevens said.

The company's statement, released in New York, said an investigation by the National Labor Relations Board apparently developed no evidence to support the charge. Stevens called the withdrawal by the union "a clear admission that the charges had no merit." Harold McIver, a textile union director based in Charlotte, told The Greenville News that the 'withdrawal was "no big deal." "There are hundreds of charges filed against Stevens, and hundreds of things they've done to their workers," he said. "That we withdrew one little thing is no big deal. It doesn't negate the fact they've been found guilty of all these other The NLRB confirmed that the complaint was withdrawn May 12 at the board's office in Winston-Salem, N.C.
