A half-dug grave was dis covered about half a mile from Ed dy's body. Authorities said the shovel matched the type of shovel used to dig the grave. "I knew there was something wrong with the story about Jean going to California," Deming said. "She once told me that California was the dumbest place in the world." Clarence Larson told authorities a different story. He was sleeping upstairs, his wife downstairs when he heard noise at 2 a.m.

on Oct 6. The next morning, Jean Larson was gone and the house doors were unlocked, Clarence Larson said in the affidavit He was indicted for the murder of his first wife, Martha, In Murray County in 1962. He was acquitted in a jury trial. Clarence told authorities that on the night of her death, Martha slept in the upstairs bedroom while he slept downstairs. Clarence and Jean Larson were married in 1964.

Clarence Larson declined to be Interviewed for this article. Olivia Zoellner, Jean Larson's daughter, has heard all the rumors that subsequently rippled through Tracy, she said in a telephone interview from her home in Belgrade, Mont, but "all I know is my mother didn't Just walk away. She was killed." Authorities agreed with Zoellner. Bloodstains were found in the Larsons' kitchen and on her coat But because Jean Larson's disappearance occurred before the 1981 amendment mentioned by Fabel, her body has become a necessity for murder charges to be filed, said Lyon County Attorney David W. Peterson.

The Tracy police, Lyon County sheriffs department and BCA searched for months for Jean Larson's body. Boy Scout troops covered fields throughout southwestern Minnesota. And in 1981, psychic Maurice Dyk-shoorn was brought to Minnesota from New York to aid in the investigation. As recently as this past August authorities in Lyon and Murray court ties explored a section of Lake She-tek, near Currie. Jn addition to motive and suspects, t'lt also helps to have the victim's Jody," said Don Stokke, Lyon County heriff. before 1981, it was nearly Impossible 4o charge a suspect with murder Without the body as evidence, said Jrosecutor Tom Fabel, a deputy Minnesota attorney general. An amend-Jnent to a Minnesota law three years jgo changed that, but only if the fact of death can be proven with circumstantial evidence beyond reasonable -doubt J'Even with the change In law, it's extremely rare that anyone would be Charged with murder without the victim's body," Fabel said. 5 jThe 1980 disappearance of Leona Heart Larson illustrates just bow difficult that can be: Diane Deming worked at a Tracy, bar and every day without fail, she said, her best friend, Jean Larson, would stop by for a "little, short Miller" or orange pop.

But on Oct. 7, 1980, Jean Larson didn't stop by. Deming remembers the date well. It was just two days before Deming's birthday and six days before Larson's 62nd birthday. "I mentioned to a couple people that I should call the cops to tell them she's missing and people just laughed at me," Deming recalled.

"From that moment on, I never did think she was alive." According to an affidavit filed four years ago in support of a Lyon County search warrant, Jean Larson was last seen before Oct 6, 1980. She and her husband, Clarence, had planned to auction some of their belongings. When auctioneer Richard Reiner arrived at their house Oct 6, only Clarence Larson was home. According to the affidavit, he told Reiner his wife was receiving treatment for arthritis in the Twin Cities. It was not until Oct 31 that Clarence Larson reported, his wife missing.

Between Oct. 6 and Oct 31, Clarence Larson told inquirers that his wife: was in the Twin Cities, but not for medical treatment; had gone to Wisconsin and California for health reasons; was visiting a cousin in Wisconsin; had gone to California, where he would join her in December. He told others that he did not know where she was, according to the affidavit. "When I learned of the murder, ev erything fell into place." The sus pect it was later learned, had given the hospital a phony name. And Ken neth Harder, the present Isanti Coun ty sheriff, said reports indicate that the county attorney then did not think the evidence merited an arrest warrant Not so, said John Dablow, who was Isanti County attorney 19 years ago and is a district judge now. "You don't issue a warrant until you can put a name on it," Dablow said recently. "We just had a devil of a time putting a name on it other than John Doe. The facts were all there, but the names were all false.
