PLYVfOOO 76,032 so. ft; tMlars per 1JJ0O sq ft Lm to -Ma nri nn mt nn on ioo Gold By SCOTT SUNDE News staff writer Meyers-Arnold Co. plans to build a store in the Haywood Mall at Interstate 385 and Haywood Road, the president of the department store chain said Tuesday. Robert Alexander, Meyers-Arnold president, said that the store, which will be the chain's seventh in the Carolinas, will represent a marked departure from the company's nearly 80-year history. Instead of a department store offering both hard and soft goods, similar to those which the company operates in Upstate South Carolina and in Asheville, the Haywood Mall store will offer only men's and women's sportswear.

A store selling sportswear exclusively will "enable us to do things in a flexible way," Alexander said. He added that sportswear was chosen as the store's stock and trade because "it's today's way of living," reflecting the country's "casual lifestyle." The store's mechandise will be geared to "less conservative" customers and especially to working women, Alexander said. The Meyers-Arnold store will be in front of the Sears, Roebuck and Co. store, he said. It will be on the second level of the mall, but, because the facility is being built in a bowl, it will also be ground level.

Alexander promised that the store would be "the most eye-catching store possible the best-looking store in the mall." The store, which was designed by Atlanta architects, will include greenhouse-style windows for window shoppers. The 1 million-square-foot Haywood Mall will include more than 100 small shops and four major department stores: Sears, J.C. Penney, Rich's and Belk-Simpson. The $24 million shopping center is expected to open in August 1980. Alexander predicted that both growth of the area and expansion of the boundaries of Greenville's trade area will favor the mall.

Meyers-Arnold operates stores at McAlis-ter Square in Greenville and in Greenwood, Spartanburg and Anderson. It also has two Bon Marche department stores in Asheville. Alexander said his company would be looking for additional expansions after 1980. While he said Meyers-Arnold would continue to investigate sites for full department stores, it could also apply its Haywood Mall store concept in other areas. COLUMBIA (AP) The Shakespeare Co. said Tuesday it is looking for ways to deal with an attempted merger by Anthony Industries Inc. of Los Angeles.

Shakespeare said in a statement that it has authorized its investment banker, Kidder Peabody Co. to "seek financial alternatives to the merger proposal by Anthony Industries Inc. on terms favorable to all shareholders alike." Shakespeare obtained a temporary restraining order Monday from the Richland County Court of Common Pleas halting the sale. The company's board met late Monday, but declined to say what it planned to do percent, of Shakespeare stock from Wilmington Investments Inc. and Wilmington Securities Inc.

Wilmington Investments and Wilmington Securities are owned and controlled by Henry L. Hillman and the Hillman Co. of Pittsburgh. Richard M. Johnston, Hillman vice president, resigned as a Shakespeare director after the announcement of the stock sale.

Shakespeare announced last Friday that it had received notice of Anthony's agreement to purchase the stock and of its offer to merge with Shakespeare. Anthony manufactures swimming pools, home insulation sheathing and athletic wear, and had sales of $109 million last year. until Tuesday morning. The temporary injunction is scheduled for a court hearing on Sept. 10.

In the statement, the rod-and-reel manufacturer said its board "had determined that it did not have adequate information to take a position on the Anthony proposal at this time. The board also authorized officers and representatives of the company to hold discussions with Anthony." Shakespeare, which also makes equestrian gear, reported sales of $108 million in 1978. Several major commercial banks reacted to recent Federal Reserve credit-tightening moves by boosting their prime lending rates -point to 12 percent. Government issues fell 7-32 in intermediate and 7-32 in long maturities. Short-term governments declined 3-32, according to the investment banking firm of Salomon Brothers.

NEW YORK (UPI) The stock market slowed Tuesday as the nation's major banks raised their prime lending rate a quarter point to a record 12 percent. Trading was sluggish. The government triggered some late buying when it reported the nation's July merchandise deficit narrowed to $1.11 billion from $1.9 billion the month before. It was the 38th consecutive monthly deficit, however. Chase Manhattan, the nation's third largest bank, led the prime rate hike move because the Federal Reserve has tightened credit to fight inflation.

Other interest rates have increased. Against this background, the Dow Jones industrial average, up and down in a narrow range most of the day, finished with a loss of 0.77 point to 884.64. A 5.21-point winner Monday, the Dow has risen about 60 points the past month. The New York Stock Exchange index fell 0.06 to 62.16, the price of a share eased 3 cents and Standard Poor's 500-stock index lost 0.12 to 109.02.
