(AP) -Eighth-ranked Colorado scored 14 points with ease in the first quarter, lost two glittering chances in the second period but settled down in the second half for a 34-0 victory over Iowa State in a Big Eight Conference opener Saturday. Charley Greer's 59-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter highlighted Colorado's third victory without defeat. Quarterback Bob Anderson and his brother, defensive safety Dick, teamed to give Colorado the fifth touchdown. Dick intercepted John Warder's pass on the goal line, running out to the 22.

Bob drove the Buffaloes to a touchdown in six plays, with his three runs totaling 58 yards covering most of the drive. Washington Trims Oregon SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) Given the chance on a fumble recovery late in the final period, Washington's Huskies struck with sudden fury Saturday to whip Oregon State 13-6, chopping a Beaver victory string at nine games and knocking the loser out of a share in the Pacific 8 conference leadership. An Oregon State touchdown by quarterback Steve Preece and two field goals by Washington's Don Martin had left the teams tied at 6-6 after two peri ods. HOUSTON (AP) Undefeat ed North Carolina State shocked Houston's powerhouse with a massive defense Saturday night and capitalized on second half pass interceptions and a fumble recovery to come from behind and defeat the second-ranked Cougars 16-6.

Houston missed anotner scoring opportunity Just before the half when Ken Bailey, a sopho more understudy to Woodall, en gineered a 74-yard drive to the State 19. Three plays faued and Ken Hebert's 37-yard field goal effort on fourth down was short. The Cougars' final opportun ity to overcome the 10-6 State lead came midway in the final period when Jerry Drones re covered a fumble at tne won- pack 23. Three running plays moved to the 15 but a fourth down pitchout was fumbled and State took over at Its 22. State, with victories over North Carolina, Buffalo and Florida State, had entered the game a 21-podnt underdog.

Two passes by Donnan fig ured prominently in the 50-yard drive that gave the Wolfpack the lead after Hilka's intercep tion. An 11-yard pass moved the ball to the Houston 31 and an eieht-yarder to Harry Mattel! moved to the two from where Hall scored. Compared to the 489-yard total offense average while run-nine over Florida State, Michi gan State and Wake Forest, the Cougars netted only 258 against the Wolfpack. Houston played most of the game without Warren McVea, the speed merchant running back. McVea injured hs left shoulder in the first half but netted 4 yards on five carries.

Bailey led the rushers with 47 yards in 12 carries. Leon Mason led State with 35 yards in eight plays. Dorman completed 10 of 21 passes for 96 yards. Woodall completed seven of nine for 53 and Bailey completed four of 12 for 43 yards. N.C.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -Purdue's Boilermakers bombed the Northwestern Wildcats with three touchdowns in the final quarter Saturday for a come-from-behind 25-16 victory in the Big Ten football opener for both teams. The slick passing of quarterback John Cartwright and running of halfback Jeri Balsly sustained the 12-play drive which consumed most of the final eight minutes of play. Cartwright set up the touchdown with a 17-yard pass to end Rob Taylor to the Michigan 42. The Browns' quarterback shaking off two sprained ankles along with shoulder and finger injuries, threw a 15-yard touchdown to Paul Warfield in the second quarter and added two more in the third.

Ryan connected on a 49-yard TD toss to Ralph Smith and a 15-yarder to Ernie Green that gave Cleveland a 21-10 lead. Nebraska Ekes By Kansas MANHATTAN, Kan. UP) -Bill Bomberger'a 31-yard field goal with 1:11 left, climaxing a last ditch 17-play drive, rescued unbeaten 7th ranked Nebraska 16-14 Saturday over fired-up Kansas State. The Lions may be pardoned a they greet the news with something less than enthusiasm. Ordinarily, no team in Rs right mind would relish meeting the Starr-led Packers. But Bart has been having his problems this year.In the season's opening game, the Lions intercepted four of his passes and threw him for losses seven times for a total of 58 yards. In Green Bay's second game, a close victory over Chicago, Star was intercepted five times and it wasn't until he was taken out of the line-up against Atlanta last week and Zeke Bratkow-ski took over at quarterback, that the Packers began to click, wracking up the Falcons 23-0. Mike Hilka started the Wolf-pack upset by intercepting a Houston pass early in the third period and returning 11 yards to midfield. Bill Moreman went off guard on the left side to dash 27 yards and fall across the goal line for Florida State's winning touch down after the ball changed hands twice in less than a min ute. Florida State drove 71 yards to the Texas eight-yard line but a pass from quarterback Kim Hammond fell into the arms of Aggie Tom Sooy in the end zone to finish tne threat momentarily. But the second play later, Seminole John Crowe recovered Aggie Larry Sgegent's fumble, setting the scene for Moreman's run. STONE AVE. LITTLE ROCK (UPI)-Quar-terback Tony Passander threw for one touchdown and ran for another Saturday night to lead The Citadel to a 20 7 yictory over Arkansas State. Arkansas State's offensive punch was severerly weakened when quarterback Tim Keane and fullback Steve Gankiewicz went out with injuries early in the second period. The Citadel's starting quarterback, Jim Goolsby, put the Bulldogs ahead in the first quarter with a 23 yard scoring pass to Gene Hightower. Passander then took over and tfirew an 8 yard scoring pass to Mark Cassidy in the second period.

In the final quarter Passander scooted five yards for the Citadel's final score. Freshman Cecil LaGrone play ed his first college football for Arkansas State after Keane was injured.
