SECTION 3 THE GREENVILLE NEWS. GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA SUNDAY. SEPTEMBER 17. 1967 0-0 Against Lions PC Battles To Tie In Hurricane Wind In 4th Period PAGE FOUR ages Special to The News PORTSMOUTH, Va. Presbyterian battled underd Frederick to a scoreless tie here Saturday afternoon in a game played in gusts of 40-60 miles an hour in the backlash of hurricane Doria.

The Blue Hose, solid favorites who have never lost to Frederick, were unable to uncork their vaunted passing at tact led by quarterback Bill Kirtland because of the wind. The Hose had two good scoring opportunities but both were unsuccessful. The first time the Hose had down and goal, Kirtland lost the football and Frederick tackle Bob Casper covered the ball to save the Lions. Early in the fourth period, the Hose had a field goal to miss by inches. After driving to the Frederick 25, Skip Home booted an attempt that hit the crossbar and dropped back into the endzone.

Once in the third period PC drove to the Lions' 28 but had to give the ball up on downs. Frederick tried three field goals but none were close. The Lions' deepest penetration was to the PC 31 in the fourth period where a three-point attempt was short. Kirtland completed only three of 10 passes for 13 yards. Meanwhile, however, fullback Dan Eckstein kept the Hose in control of the game with his bullish rushes.

He gained 83 yards on 22 carries. Robert Hackle added 42 yards as the pair of backs gained 125 of PC's 139 yards rushing. The Blue Hose also lost three fumbles. The South Carolinians completely dominated play in the second half and in the third quarter had control of the football all but four plays. It was the second tie in coach Cally Gault's five -year reign at the Presbyterian '1 RALEIGH, N.C.

(AP) A 55-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback Jim Donnan to end Harry Martell gave North Carolina State a 13-7 victory over arch-rival North Carolina Saturday in the last period of their Atlantic Coast Conference football opener. An overflow crowd of 42,300 in Carter Stadium saw the rugged Wolfpack spoil the debut of Bill Dooley who took over as head coach of the Tar Heels last winter. It was the first game of an afternoon-night doubleheader involving North Carolina "Big Four" teams. Duke met Wake Forest in the night game. Gerald Warren kicked field goals of 44 and 33 yards as N.C.

State avenged 10-7 losses to North Carolina in 1965 and 1966. The Wolfpack struck with lightning fury for its winning touchdown. Following a North Carolina punt, State took over on its 38. On the first play, Bobby Hall reeled off seven years. Donnan then fired a pass to Martell who caught it on the MM the ball, they drove to the Lions one -yard line.

On third period but was unable to cash in on it. The Tar Heels' Doug Davis took the kickoff on his 2. The Tar Heels were forced to punt, with the Wolfpack taking over on the UNC 39. However, North Carolina held and got possession on the 30. N.C.

White Shoe Brigade Born RALEIGH (UPI) A member of North Carolina State's "White Shoe Brigade" end Mark Capuano came in for special praise for coaches here Saturday. The white shoes of State's defensive unit came as a complete surprise to coaches and fans alike. Defensive coach Al Michaels said his boys got together Friday night and decided they needed an identity. They voted to polish their black football shoes white so everyone would know they were members of the brigade and proud of it. Capuano became the first hero of the proud group as he blocked a punt to set up State's second field goal on the Wolf-pack's way to a 13-7 victory over arch foe North Carolina.

(AP)-Vir- ginia Military Institute's Key dets, led by quarterback Charlie Bishop and halfback Bob Hab-asevich, rolled up 546 yards in total offense Saturday and over powered Davidson's Wildcats 46- 21 in the Southern Conference football opener for both. Bishop hit on 11 of 16 passes for 213 yards and picked up 74 more yards on the ground as he accounted for more than half VMTs total yardage only four yards short of the 6chool record for a single game. HYLTON HOLDING HIS OWN It would seem after two years of trying to put the Grand National point title into his trophy case James Hylton would feel like giving up and going back to turning wrenches for a salary.

But not so. The Inman independent is still an enthusiastic driver car owner mechanic on the rugged, expensive big league circuit of the National Assn. of Stock Car Auto Racing in the South. As a rookie in 1966, Hylton won rookie of the year while on a fruitless race with Dodge-backed David Pearson for the point title. He carried the battle to the final race of the season at Rockingham before David put it away.

This year Hylton has been nipping at Richard Petty's heels all season although NASCAR's all time record breaker has now opened a comfortable gap over young James. That spread, however, is all the more surprising because Hylton has not won a Grand National race and Petty has won 23. The Plymouth ace has compiled 37,142 points while Hylton has 34,054. "it seems almost impossible that the crew cut Hylton could be so close. The next driver, almost 9,000 points behind Hylton is Ford's Dick Hutcherson, the only Ford driver to compete regularly with Hylton and Petty in all the races, long and short.

Petty has won $114,125 to Hylton's $35,840. That's where the big difference lies. Hylton isn't even in the top five in money won. Hutcherson is second with $62,795 and Pearson third with $54,355. Cale Yarborough is fourth with $53,085 and Jim Paschal fifth at $49,430.

True, some of the glamor of his first season has worn off for Hylton but not the determination to become one of the best drivers on the GN circuit. 1ST PEARSON, NOW PETTY "It does get discouraging," Hylton admitted. "Last year it seemed that David finished them all and Petty fell out. This year Petty just keeps on winning and David drops out. But I'm making a living so I really can't be too disappointed." Hylton, who had a partner, Bud Hartje, the first year, found himself in a do or die situation early this season when Hartje Bonavena Pounds Out Unanimous Decision North Carolina 25 and easily out ran the nearest defender.

The Wolfpack took a 3-0 lead late in the first period when Warren kicked a 44-yard field goal on fourth down. A 17-yard pass from Donnan to end Don Donaldson highlighted the drive which began on State's 23. The Tar Heels went out front by rolling 80 yards for a touchdown in 20 plays with fullback Tommy Dempsey scoring from the one in the closing seconds of the first half. Don Hartig kicked the extra point. North Carolina missed a scoring opportunity early in the second period when the Tar Heels rolled from their 30 to the Wolfpack 33 on the running and passing of quarterback Gayle Bo-mar.

A fourth down field goal attempt by Hartig from the 39 was wide to the right. The Wolfpack, a 7-point favorite, got a break late in the first Remember The Mistakes, Says Loser Dooley RALEIGH (AP) "The only thing we're going to remember about this game are the mistakes we made," North Carolina Bill Dooley said Saturday after his team lost to N. C. State 13-7 in the football season opener. "We've got to work harder and not make them next time," Dooley said.

"First of all, let me say that State has a fine football team, a real fine one. I thought our boys gave a good effort, but it wasn't good enough. I don't like to lose and neither do our players." State's Wolfpack scored the i winning touchdown in the last: period on a 55-yard-pass playj from quarterback Jim Donnan1 to end Harry Martell. Dooley said that on this play "we had the blitz on and one of our men in the secondary just got beat." Baker Drives For Owens HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) Buddy Baker will replace Sam McQuagg in the Cotton Owens Dodge for Sunday's 150-mile NASCAR Grand National race at Hillsborough Speedway.

Baker said it was a one-race deal since his own car owner, Ray Fox, does not run the short tracks. Another source said Baker was selected because of his experience on medium-length dirt tracks such as Hillsborough's nine-tenths of a mile oval. Baker drove an Owens short track car at Columbia last week. wanted to pull out. They split from businessmen in the little town of Inman in order to keep his car, a 1965 Dodge.

Running the circuit to make a living is hard. Having to fight the factory drivers to pay off a debt like $14,000 is almost impossible. Yet, Hylton is nearing that goal. Going into the Southern 500 he said he had paid off over half the amount and managed to keep himself and one mechanic on salary plus pay expenses for his pit crew at the major events. Much to the chargin of the factories, Hylton claims he has made his living this year on the i s.J A GAME He threw two touchdown passes, one of 40 yards to Frank Easterly, who set a school mark by grabbing six eeriais for 188 yards.

The other went 66 yards to Jim Burg. Habasevich rushed for 93 yards on 26 carries, scored VMI's first touchdown on a 29-yard run, kicked two extra points and ran for another conversion. He completed one of two passes he threw for another 46 yards. The Wildcats had their own star in a losing cause as quarterback Jimmy Poole threw for and sent Mildenberger flopping on the seat of his pants in the 10th. The result was a disappointment to a pro-Mildenberger, SRO crowd of 18,000 which packed Frankfurt's outdoor cycling stadium for the fight.

It was the 28th victory for Bonavena against three defeats and the fourth loss for Milden berger, who has won 52 of his 59 fights, 18 by knockouts. All told, the Wildcats completed 21 of 41 aerials for 248 yards. After Bishop had hit Easterly with the scoring toss on which they combined, the Wildcats marched 63 yards with Poole passing the last yard to Pete Glidewell to make it 15-8. Davidson still was in the game early in the fourth quarter after matching a third -period VMI touchdown which came on a two- yard run by Chuck Marks. A 42-yard Poole-to-Greg Cox aerial narrowed the Wildcats' deficit to 22-15. That would go a long way toward getting me free of debt. It would really be a big boost to us," he added. Hylton didn't get the good finish at Darlington but he has two more races in which to get that grubstake this season.

He will be at Charlotte and Rockingham to close out the season and a good finish there would put him back in business this year. ON OUTSIDE LOOKING IN But things might be back in the same shape next season. He is going to be forced to buy a new racer. In finishing runnerup in the point standings twice and making enough money to pay the bills, Hylton may have been shutting the door to the inner circle of the factories. He has built the reputation of a stroker one who lays back and just tries for a good finish. That is no way to attract the backing of the factories they want a winner.

That is what sells cars. Hylton is caught between the proverbial rock and a hard spot. He has to finish to make money and he has to be a charger to earn factory help in a big way. "I haven't given up on a ride for next year," he said. "That's what I've been working on since I started.

That is the ambition of all the drivers." There isn't a nicer guy in racing than James Hylton. He has a beautiful wife and a young son. The life he has chosen is rough on them. It is rough on him. "You really don't feel like giving your best when you've stayed up all night working on the car and then spent all day driving to the track.

You give away more than money to the factory drivers then. You just aren't as sharp as they are. The fatigue gets to you."
