(News-Piedmont sports photo by Leon Carncs) INCREDIBLE DID HAPPEN rANE OF THE BABE RUTH stories that Jim Coker of Brandon has often told, which seemed too incredible to be true, has been substantiated in Arthur Daley's jbook, "Inside Baseball." Coker was a textile pitcher of note in his playing days, you will remember. He first told us the story at a jBouthern Textile Basketball Tournament. Few would Relieve it really could have happened. It was that Babe Ruth once hit a ball between a pitcher's legs and the ball went over the head of the center fielder.

Now doesn't that sound impossible? But Daley explains that it did. And Jim passes along a copy of the book. 1 Hod Lisenbee, who had come out of Tennessee and was having a rookie year with the Washington Senators, 3vas the pitcher. The center fielder was aging Tris Speaker, who had left a long and illustrious career at Cleveland. 2 Just before Lisenbee delivered the pitch to Ruth, center fielder Speaker began to sneak in toward second an attempt to trap a runner of the bag, according to 3Daley.

"The ball came back with such velocity that it went Screaming through the pitcher's legs," writes Daley, 2'and went sailing serenely over the head" of Speaker. Only Ruth could be involved in such a story. Greenwood Evens Legion Series, 7-3 Greer closed the gap with a run in the third. COKER SLAMS CINCINNATI (AP) Jim Coker smashed a grand 6lam homer in the first inning, propelling the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs Thursday night, Deron Johnson added a two-run homer for the Reds, who have won five of their last six games, including three straight from the last place Cubs. Chicago pitchers now have allowed 15 home runs in the last seven games. Tommy Harper led off the first inning with a single. Two outs later, he stole second and raced home on Tony Perez' single. Tommy Helms followed with a single and Johnson walked before Coker hit a Curt Simmons pitch over the scoreboard for his third season homer and second career grand slam.

121 GREENVILLE, I. C. Church and Irvine Friday, August 5th. mi ATLANTA (AP) Orlando Cepeda triggered a five-run burst in the second inning with his 17th homer and scored the deciding run in the eighth as the St. Louis Cardinals downed Atlanta 7-5 Thursday night for their fourth straight victory and 10th in the last 11 games.

The Cardinals withstood a three-run Atlanta rally in the eighth after successive doubles by Cepeda and Mike Shannon gave them a 6-2 bulge in the top of the inning. Two-run triples by Dal Max-viil and Lou Brock completed the second inning assault against loser Don Schwall after Cepeda led off the inning with his shot into the left field stands. Bob Gibson, who retired in the eighth with a sore pitching elbow after yielding five hits, registered his 13th victory against nine losses. Joe Torre led off the eighth with a single and Gibson gave way to Don Dennis, who was clipped for successive singles by Rico Carty and Frank Boiling for one run. Mike De La Hoz' sacrifice fly and Denis Menke's two-run double off Joe Hoerner completed the Braves' rally.
