Green Bay Press-Gazette Wednesday, June 4, 1975 A13 Manuscripts Available For 4 Summer Plays COOL AIR-CONDITIONED FCC Outlawing Phony Contests NOW 2 EXCELLENT HITS OPEN OlOO I Production scripts and scores of the University and Green Bay summer Theater Company's four offerings are available at the circulation desk of the Central Brown County Library and the Creative Communication Office at the university. "The Typists" and "The Ti-ger" are short plays by Murray Schisgal. "The Diary of Adam and Eve" and "Passio-nella" are musicals from "The Appletree" by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. All four will be presented in repertory during the week of July 14 through 19 in the theater on the UWGB campus. Under the title "Two for the Show," there will be two programs of a play and masical promotions which are intended solely to build up the listener audience about the time listener surveys are taken by rating organizations.

That type of practice by broadcasters is known as "hypoing." It also would ban contests or promotions within three months of a rating survey if they are designed to cause listeners to report to a rating service that they tune to a particular station with greater frequency than they actuallly do. In the addition, broadcasters would not be allowed to make claims about audience size or coverage area without providing the name of the surveying firm, the area involved and the date the survey was conducted. winner of the contest got the keys but only the keys to the new car. Commission sources said some of the contests that draw complaints are fraudulent. The major problems with contests are unclear rules which create confusion, claims that a prize will be given when none Is available and no provision for tie-breaking.

Another contest frowned on the the FCC was called "Lucky Bucks." The person who turned in a dollar bill with a specified serial number would win a prize. The FCC found the odds were astronomically against any winner turning up. The FCC also plans to ban use of contests and special WASHINGTON (AP) The Federal Communications Commission is outlawing phony and misleading contests used by some broadcasters and is cracking down on gimmicks giving a false picture of listener totals. The commission agreed unanimously among five of the seven members present at a May 29 meeting to take action, but sources said Tuesday it still is hung up in details. One radio contest several years ago was cited as the type of material the FCC plans to ban.

For weeks, an announcer rattled car keys next to his microphone and said the listener who guessed the date of the first snowfall would win keys to a new car. The each on alternating evenings.
